Is This A 1999?

My grandfather is thinking about getting a new truck, well new to him! the last one he got he has put 3000 mile on it in 4 years! And i drove it for a month and put about 1200 of those miles on! its their second car. He does not want to get a new one or even spend more then 10K because of the lack of miles he will drive it. I think he wants one just because he is bored with his daily driver (new buick). Anyway he called me last night saying he found this one at the dealership and was thinking about getting it, he said its got the 5.7L, 4 wheel drive, and 139,000 miles. but they are asking 5500 for it! and its a one owner truck, carfax is clean, he said everything looks in great shape. So i found it on the dealers website and I am not sure this is a 99! thought 99 started the less boxed body style.

So my question is, is this a 99? or is it a 98? does the 99 build year have the same type of 2 body styles as 2007 did?

And does anyone have any known issues with these trucks? I would like to know because i will prolly end up being the one under it when something happens!

Thanx

There was a '99 classic and a '99 New Body Style. This is a classic, obviously. I had a clean '91 RCSB 4X4 Sierra with 238K on it that I sold for 3 grand in '07 for reference. My guess is they'd let it go for $4750. Maybe even a few bucks less. The GMT400 trucks were about as solid as any truck GM has ever produced, IMO. They are also easy as shit to work on and fix, parts everywhere. :dunno:

yeah what daddy said. i had a 92 and a 97 and i think they are the best trucks i ever had. dont get me wrong i like mine but those are modern classics.

+1

I had an 89 GMC Sierra Reg cab/long box with the 5.7. It was an SLE (not loaded), but it was by far the most solid truck I ever owned. I still miss that truck. I sold that truck to my best friend in 99 and he drove it until 2006. He lives in a small town in southern MN and he still sees it on the road today. It had about 250K miles on it in 2006 when he got rid of it, original motor and trans. Only engine work was head gaskets.

damn Just looking at the 2 pics side by side I had to call him and ask if he was trying to be like me withthe red!

Thanks guys, I know I will end up driving it as he lives about 4 hours north of me, sometime I leave mine up there with him and drive his car/truck home. I works out good because he has nothing to do all day, so if i need my truck taken to the dealer, or anything like that he takes care of it and it gives him somethink to do. Infact I am having my door jams and the bottom and inside of my doors rust proofed and repainted in the spring. I know that sounds odd but I never invested is doorsil guards so now it will get repainted before a pair goes on, and he will strip the paint off the bottom of the doors and the inside of the doors get painted with this stuff i think its called rust bullet, then everything gets repainted and you would never know. We did it on my last truck and its was great. so i would be driving his truck for about a month.

The best truck I ever had was my "97 Sierra. The Suburban I have now is a close second. I think that generation is the best...

Just look at the VIN. If the tenth digit is an X then it is a 99. If it is a W, it is a 98. Pure and simple. Build dates have little to do with year model. There are too many variables.

I had a 99 NBS. I think I'm allowed to say NBS in this case. Although technically I should probably say GMT800.

I have no personal experience with the GMT400's, but my truck was rock solid. Only thing ever wrong with it was a starter about 1.5 years ago. My sister now drives it.

I agree with Zembones, check the VIN. That's the best way to tell, barring someone tampering with it. But it's not like we're in the classic car world . . . :dunno:

I'm glad it's got wheel drive. :dunno:

I really like the look of the truck +1 to all the available parts for that truck

My other truck is a 99 Classic and it is the same body style as that truck!!! And like said above check that 10nth didgit if it is a X its a 99 classic...

Just click on my profile there is a photo of it in there...

IMO I would look to see if it has a towing package, if so then more than likely there is a Tranny cooler... And I think that the trucks with tranny coolers hold up better.. And its probably safe to say that he isnt going to tow with it... But like I said thats my own opinion... My truck has almost 200k on original engine and tranny!!!

I would pay attention to the front suspension. I replaced pitman, idler arms and bushings around 150k... I noticed a jolt or like the tire would skid during a tight steer and I could experience this backing up and then moving forward...

Back when I was driving early 80 models trucks in the 90's these trucks with the 5.7 vortec were my dream truck... :shakehead:

Nice, what a steal! I got my '98 Chevrolet K1500 for $6500 (maybe $6700; $7200 after fees) and it had only 2-3k miles less than that. It looks to be a higher trim level than mine, but my truck is a plain 4x4, as well. As the others said, I'm pretty sure it could be a 1999 because they sold the GMT400s as late as 2000, I think. What would be the point of lying about the year, anyway? You could check the VIN if you're still uncertain. The tenth digit should be "X", I believe. "V" would be 1997, "W" 1998, and "Y" 2000.

EDIT: Chevanater2500hd already beat me to decoding the VIN. :shakehead:

I agree, I actually owned a '99 Classic. Great solid truck. No one believed me when I told them. I had to

break out insurance cards. Looking back, the 400s were just so ahead of their time. Beautiful trucks.
