Gas Mileage Improvement Ideas?

Recommended Posts

Looking for input on anything that you have used that improved your gas mileage.

I drive very light on the pedal and am getting 16.2 around town with my 98 Sub (gas 4x4).

I run the tires a little high for reduced rolling resistance.

Just curious if anyone has had any luck with things like cold air intake, re-programing chips, oil/gas additives, etc.

If you add a bunch of mods together, like a good tune, CAI, cat back, using a higher octane gas, you may see a small increase in mileage (1-2 mpg). But getting 16.2 around town with a 98 burb is pretty darn good.

I would be happy getting 16.2. My 01 4x4 4.8 ext cab gets 15.6 around town. No, there is nothing wrong with it. I had all sensors checked, no lazy ones, maintained meticulously. Just the nature of the beast. :) I run 50 PSI.

I'm really anal about it to get 16.2.

I mean I'm coasting as much as I can.

High tire pressure, synthetic oil, etc.

To give you an exampl of how hard I work at it, I took a SL1 5 speed Saturn on a 1400 mile trip and averaged 44.2 on the entire trip.

You have to have your foot off the gas as much as possible.

Take off slow and let up early to let it upshift.

Coast way early when approching red lights, etc.

Cruise is nice relief on a long trip but much better gas mileage can be gotten with a light foot.

I'd look at basics like a tune-up, plugs, plug wires, O2 sensors, and things like that before I looked at exhaust, CAI, tunes, etc.. Yes, you "can" get increased fuel mileage with performance modifications, but only if you can keep your foot out of it (which you seem to be able to do).

If you're REALLY concerned about the mileage you're getting, I'd suggest getting a smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient vehicle. There's only so much squeezing you can do before there's no more MPG to get out of one.. :dunno:

I think you might own the wrong type of vehicle. Might look into a Prius or Smart.

Ha Ha..No way.. I LOVE this Truck.

It scoots when I give it the spurs, have no fear.

I bought it to tow with, the best right?

No worries. It's cool if you want to get better mileage. Please just don't be a hazzard on the road like the hypermilers that are out there. :dunno:

The best advice I can give you to save gas is this; Drive less. Seriously. It is the quickest and easiest way to cut your fuel bill. But......If your looking for more information use the "search" feature to check out other threads. There is a wealth of knowledge on this topic on the site. Good luck.

Absolutly Merlin.. Drive less is the biggest and best gas saving method out there period.

I do conserve/double up on trips and think about it more with todays gas prices for sure.

With 5 kids you know I'm on the road a lot however.

I am curious about the thing-a-ma-jiggies you can buy to re-program your computer however.

I'm also always the skeptic. If they can re-program to better mileage, why isn't GM doing it?

Most claim higher HP and higher mileage. Doesn't seem to make sense.
