First Oil Change In 6.0l 08 Silverado

When I bought my 08 Silverado with the 6.0L VortecMax, the sales guy (a long-time truck sales person) at the dealership told me that the first oil change should be at 5000 miles :dunno: He also said that the dealership uses a synthetic blend oil when they do oil changes although he didn't specifically state it was only for the 6.0 or any of the other truck motors.

Nor did he state what weight or even brand of oil would be used (I'm thinking it would be Pennzoil or Quaker State as I have seen both signs in the drive through area in the Service Department over the years).

They also gave me a card for a free first time oil change and three more oil changes at half-price. So the price is fine, but is the mileage between changes OK especially for the first oil change?? Right now the truck has 1200 miles on it and 46 hours engine time. The oil life monitor shows 81% remaining.

Every 5000 miles is fine. The DIC will likely indicate that there is 30% oil life remaining. Even so, I like to change the first time around 1000 miles just to clear out any possible debris from the manufacturing process. This might be overkill but it's cheap insurance in my book. After that I change every 5K.

1500 for 1st change and every 3000 after that. I like to have clean (50%+ oil life remaining) oil in my engine ALL the time.

Cheap insurance IMO, especially since I do it myself.

Edit: I should add that I use conventional oil, not a fan of synthetic.

I use a quick oil drain valve for my vehicle and it really helps save my time on oil changes. That small gadget is simply ball valves with the lever to open and close it, replacing your oil drain plug. You quickly turn the lever and drain the oil without a wrench. Worth to check it out.

Why in the world are you NOT a fan of Synthetics? They truly are better. They lubricate much better, especially for dry starts, and lower operating temperatures. To me, it just make sense using them. I guess if your hard set on changing every 3000 miles, then synthetics wouldn't be a good choice, but if you want to extend oil changes they are worth it. Besides, the oil meter just doesn't kick on every so many miles, alot of calculations are involved in when the oil should be changed.

Anyways, for my self, I did my first oil change at 1000 miles, and then 5000-7000 there after. Synthetics been in my truck since the beginning.

Let me rephrase....I am not a fan of extended oil changes. I prefer CLEAN oil in my engine...ALL of the time.

Do you change on the "change engine oil" light comes on or just clear it and track mileage manually? I switched to M1 and every dealer tells me something different. Some say go by the light still, others say two cycles of the light, others say 6000 miles. Lord, not even GMC can give me a good or consistent answer! :D

Interested to know your and others cycle on oil changes when running M1 in vehicles that don't have the OLI light, only the "change engine oil" light. .

if you look at my name over to the left ,let me tell ya ,buddy had it right ,1500 miles for the forst ,just get rid off it ,it is junk oil full off engine break in crap, then 3000 after that or earlier, its only oil and a filter ,synthetic is twice as expensive and its changed longer ,same money ,in the end ,like buddy said ,no dirty oil,GM says they will honour the light change intervals,if you are anal about changing it every 3000 miles with GM oil,it will live forever ,my 6.2 has 420,000KM on it ,I raised from a pup with 85 k on it ,it is a painless decision, trust the tech!

I changed the oil at 1000 and 2000 miles just to be certain any break-in debris would be removed. Since then I do it every 3000 miles and also just use conventional oil.

I change it when the light comes on. Its usually between 5,000-7,000 miles on average so far depending on my driving conditions. I wouldn't consider that to extended and I ran Royal purple, and now Mobil 1... I couldn't justify RP's price difference and I had great success with my last truck.

If you now have 1200 miles on the truck, I would suggest changing it now or at least by 1500 miles. I would change the next change after another 2,000 to 3,000 miles. After this, I would have no issue going to 5,000 miles as long as you are not making short trips everyday.
