Motor Oil Price Increase

I needed to change oil in my truck so I went to the local Advance Discount auto parts store and found out that Castrol GTX has gone up in price from about $ 2.75 to $ 4.00/quart!!!!!!! :D

Now would somebody please explain how is this possible? The price of crude oil has fallen by 50% since June 08, the price of gasoline is way down and they simply increase the price of motor oil by 25% ?

WOW. 16 bucks a gallon for motor oil. Crazy.

I don't know why.

Luckily they had a special on Mobil 1 around here, 30 bucks for 5 qts+filter, ended up being about maybe 39 after tax and 1 more quart (but the guy managed to get the price down to what the other qts were). I was gonna wait a few more miles but the promotion ends next week and it needed a change anyways, checked the oil after I bought the mobil1 and it was getting dark.

Course, synthetic normally runs almost 7 dollars a qt....

Yes, it appears to be an increase across the board or all oil brands. It seems that the oil companies cannot gouge us on prices of gas as effectively as before, so they found another way yet again.

I did an oil change last week...I almost SH!&* when they rang it up. The "Good 'ole day's is gone"...Still cheaper than a motor :D:P ...one good way to look at it.

I bought some oil for my tractor today for $5.60/qt. (semi-synthetic) at a Deere dealer. I was surprised at the 'low' price and the guy working there said they had just received a new shipment along with new, higher prices. Since I was buying "old" stock, I got the old price.

Even chassis grease went up, I bought 2 barrels of Chevron Ultra Duty NLGI 1 today for the shop, and it is $80 more per barrel.

It's probably due to that when the manufacturer bought the raw oil, the price was high per barrel. So even though the price of oil has dropped now the pricing structure for the finished product depends on the price of the raw material at the time of its purchase. It may be that in a few months when the raw material purchased now hits the shelves as a final product the price may go down.

Yep. Methinks that this is just the ripple effect finally reaching consumers. Just wait until that same ripple makes it way through the rest of the supply chain especially in commodities such as food.

It already has, at least it has here. As for the oil, they have us by the balls, even the cost of new tires has risen, and are expected to rise again. :D

Pep Boys here locally is rinning a special, 5 quarts of Penzoil 5W30 with a Pualator Filter for $9.99! You can get Full Synthetic with a Pure ! Filter for $24.99. Not sure how much longer that will last, maybe I should stock up!

You know, even with the price of oil fluctuating wildly and having been high for most of the last year and a half, engine oil prices stayed relatively flat for the last 2 years. It suddenly going up makes me think that oil companies just realized that they haven't been getting their cash they COULD charge from all their products.
