Headed To Texas

So I just heard back from Kiewit in Ft. Worth that I got an internship from them for the summer of 09. I will start sometime in the end of May. My grandpa on my mom's side of the family knew Peter Kiewit when he helped Peter get a deal on some CAT equipment from Nebraska Machinery. He also you to go after work to fix them when they broke down. I know that he would be proud that I am going to go work for them.

So when can we have a big Texas GM-Trucks meet and greet? I don't know exactly what area I am going to yet, but I think it would be pretty sweet to meet some of you guys down in Texas since I'm headed that way.

I grew up in the DFW area, now I live in Houston. You'll really love being in TX, have you been before?

We're having a 'meet & greet' the 2nd weekend in Dec right now. Well, not so much a meet and greet as it is a group Blackbear tune in FtW... You sure you don't want to get down here a little early?

Congrats on getting your internship there! :jester:

I'd make a Texas meet for sure. DFW won't be any different in climate than MO really. Hot sumers and not terribly cold winters.

I don't know exactly where it will be. It'll be around that area, just depends on what jobs that have going on at the moment. I've been to Texas a couple of times on vacation and always liked it. Yes including the Big Texan where they have the 72 oz steak. Had me some rattlesnake while we were there.

Wow dude that a big move! Congratulations! Whats with a new sig? Are you dreaming again??

I was just talking to a guy out of Charlotte that does the Allison 1000 rebuilds/upgrades... I think that he may give me a good deal!

Thanks man, No I'm pretty happy with my GMT-800 series. I just happen to be researching a little on Chevy's site and I came across that photo in the gallery. It's one of the new ones they added since I have been there. So I liked it and made it my sig.

EDIT: What kind of deal are you getting? Mods and price?

I am looking at a complete rebuild for a strong run-able 1000hp enduring tranny... The guy actually works for Allison and does this on trannys for about 6g's... I talked to him for an hour and he said that I can come there and drop my truck off at the shop and pay the 6g's or drop it off at his personal shop and get it all done in half the time for about 2500-3000...

I got his business card from one of the GMT-800 Series guys around here and he had it done and then got tuner, cat back, 6" lift ect...

The only thing I want is just a little reassurance that when I step on it hard that the Allison won't go into limp. Thats one reason I don't do anything above the 1st setting on the Edge Juice.

Yeah I hear ya on that one.. Thats why I dont have a programmer period right now.. It got enough hp and torgue for now and not far from be the most powerful on the road stock when it comes to gassers and other diesels.. I cant get over the 660 ft lbs of torque...

I am in the same predicament. The power is great, although I know it can make much more. I won't do it unless I am confident in the transmission. Until I can fork enough to get mine built I won't have any programming done.

The Edge is at least nice that if it notices slippage it will back the engine power down to save it. I have check the little info and it has never had any backdown and the slippage on the tranny is only like 1-2% even when the converter is unlocked. And that was on setting 3. I won't go past setting 3 but I am not comfortable with leaving it on setting three. When I launch I can't even hookup the rear end.

Damn, you're making it sound very tempting. Understand that I have 162k (80% highway) on this truck. It has the 5-speed auto tranny. It's shifted very strong and I've never felt it struggle but I feel like a programmer would do it in anyway. What's your opinion?

I have 137k on mine. Never shifted rough either. Never felt it not have nuts either. The first week I had it I hauled my sisters 99 Ford Escort back 90 miles, 89*F, hilly terrain, a/c running, and the cruise set. Just purred along. Once I got the Edge it made a world of difference. It adjusts the fuel so there is better response when you have low boost. Helps with cruise a ton at least it does on mine cause the Allison grade brakes to maintain speed. It has got a little better gas mileage if you can keep your foot out of it, but I can't so it hasn't changed much. Mostly highway I can get in the 20s. City is down to about 15 or so. Plus there is all the protection built in and it helps the trans be stronger and smarter. Can quiet the engine a little bit. You will notice night and day difference in the truck. I let my mom and dad drive and they both thought it was easier to drive. And my dad has been driving a 5-ton P30 Chassis van with 6.2L and 4L80, 6.5L with 4L80 and the Allison for about 22 years.

I feel I'd be pretty safe if I only used levels 2 and 3 and didn't dog it. It's nice not having a transmission that's a given weak point like on the half-ton Chevrolet 1500's.
