So before all you guys got your nice new fancy trucks...

did you own a GMT-400?

and if you did what year and how many miles did you have on it before getting rid of it? and when you got rid of it what problems did it have?

My first truck was a 1989 GMC Sierra SLE RCLB with the 350. I bought it in 1990 with 20K miles on it for $13K (it was $18K new).

I drove it until 1999 when I bought my 2000 GMC. It had 142K miles on it. I sold it to my best friend for $6K. He drove it until 2006 and sold it to a local in his small southern MN town. It had about 250K on it when he sold it and he still sees it on the road today.

The only work he did to it was head gaskets (other than normal wear and tear items). Still had original motor and tranny when he sold it.

Best built truck I ever owned. :P

1989 Sierra K1500 SLT- 5.7 TBI/auto had 200K on it when I traded it

1997 K1500 Xcab Z71 LT - no problems 5.7 Vortec/auto 85K

1998 K2500 Xcab Sierra SLT- 7.4 Vortec/Auto 75K

1994 or '95?? Tahoe 2 door 5.7 TBI/auto very reliable, another one that went 200K and sold it

I am bad on a couple of those years :P

Never an engine, trans, or diff issue.

Some ball joints here and there...a couple seals...a couple fuel pumps, no big deal, I take excellent care of my vehicles

thats pretty cool... 250,000 miles is a lot.. i only have 130,000 now so i could probably get 250 out of it if i really wanted to.

i really like the 97/98's they were pretty advanced for the time (i think) i suppose id have to ask the guys that can remember back then..... So?

my first vehicle was a 88 chevy RCSB 4wd. and I still have it! I bought it with a 35K mile 350 crate engine. THe truck had 120K miles. ANd its now at probably at 90K on the engine and over 200K miles on the rest . Im not really sure. The OD stopped spinning back in early 04 with 186,000 miles. Its still kickin' with the flames in the headliner and dual flowmaster super 40 exhaust!!

the only complaint Ive ever really had with it is the soft brakes, but from what I hear its a first year design problem

My dad bought a C-10 brand new in 1981. Drove it every day until I turned 16, when it became mine. I drove it until I left for college, and the only reason I didn't take it with me was because the block was cracked and would leak oil. I left in 2000 and he drove it for another year and a half. That truck had 190000 on it in 2002 when someone finally killed it by throwing a pumpkin through the windshield. 20 years, that's a good truck.

We've still got the truck in a shed, waiting for me to get enough saved up to start restoring it.

I got a used '02 silverado in 2006. The first truck I bought with my own money, and drove it until we had to upgrade the regular cab to an ext cab.

I know that doesn't really cover the truck you're asking about, my '02 was a great truck that I'd miss even more if I didn't have the new GMT900.

1992 Sierra, Reg Cab, Short box 4x4 with Step-side..still a hot truck around here, and hard to find. Drove it 2.5 yrs and sold it

1993 Silverado, 350, 5-speed manual, 2wd, Red, pretty quick for a 5.7 TBI truck, lots of fun to drive. Had it for over a year, sold it.

1995 Silverado, Extended Cab, 2wd, 5.7 v8. Bought it for $3500 from my old employer, sold it

4 weeks lated for $6400 cash.

1998 Sierra, Black, Ext Cab, Z-71, 4x4 - actually looks just like op's truck...talk about luxury on wheels-this was it. Quiet, dependable, Leather, and good looks. Had it over 3 yrs, and sold it.

Riggs, you don't own a POS truck. You own a good truck, and yes, it needed a little recon. It would be foolish to get rid of it. Drive it, and enjoy it.

I bought my 1995 in 97 and it had 12001 miles on it. I have been through 3 transmissions (from what my tranny guy told me 95 are worse than other years), a paint job, 3 sets of wheels, and I don't know how many sets of tires. It now has over 170000 miles

Besides the transmissions, I have had no other major problems. I know the transmission issue is not small, but I love the truck. I still have it and the only reason I bought a new truck is my family is expanding and I have a little one on the way. I wanted something a little bigger, more air bags, and those soft brakes become more of an issue. The GMT400 is in my top three favorite Chevy truck body styles. Top three = 70-72, GMT400 and 900.

Here is my red 94 and my green 96. I had a red 93 5.7 - 5 speed excab but I don't have a pic of it. The green 96 was a real favorite of mine until I bought a GMT800 99 model excab when they came out..

I know what you mean by "a good truck". I've got a 1980 C-10 Silverado that I bought new. It's still a daily driver for me. I rebuilt the engine and tranny at about 125k. Engine had main bearing shear. Built the motor back much better. Hotter cam, different intake and carb setup. Reworked the heads It will pull loads without a problem and flat out fly on the highway. 28 years old, 250k miles or so. I don't think I can give it up. I just need to paint it sometime. I've got a '64 Chevy 1/2 ton truck that belonged to my dad, I've been trying to find the time to re-build it. Not enough hours in the day......

Cool thread!!! Heres my list of GMT400's......

'93 K1500 regular-cab short-bed Z71,350-V8/Auto,Kept it a year before I traded it in with 24,000 miles on it (traded it for a '94 S10 ZR2 that I only ended-up keeping for 9 months)

'94 K1500 extended-cab short Z71,350-V8/Auto,Kept it 2-1/2 years before I traded it in with 36,000 miles on it (traded it for a '97 K1500)

'97 K1500 extended-cab short Z71,350-V8/Auto,Kept it 2-1/2 years before I traded it in with 34,000 miles on it (traded it for a '99 K1500) (The "All-new" GMT800)

I usually get a new truck every few years, there was nothing wrong with any of these trucks, nor did I have any issues with any of them,I just wanted a new one all the time!!

ZZ327,The "soft" brake pedal wasn't just a "first year" design problem,All my GMT400 's had a soft pedal.

And I still think the GMT400's were some of the best looking, best designed, and best built and toughest trucks GM built,Thats why I'm looking for another RCSB right now in a '96-'98 year range.
