Driveshaft Replacement

I took my truck into the dealer for a drivetrain noise. It occurs whenever you load or unload the drivetrain. It makes a series of "tinging" noises, similar to that of a new exhaust "cooling" off. They originally replaced the rear u-joint, but that didnt do anything. Now they are saying its the aluminum driveshaft that needs to be replaced. They have ordered a new one and will call me when its in.

Do you think this is the right diagnosis? What would go bad in the driveshaft itself if its not a u-joint? It almost sounds like it couldnt be eminating from the rear diff, and the big hollow driveshaft just boosts the volume of it. Any thoughts? This will be the 3rd time its gone in for this problem and they cant seem to fix it.

truck is a 06 1500 Ext 4x4 Z71

thanks

I'd ask them WHY the shaft needs to be replaced. A small crack could cause a 'ting' noise. Depending on where the crack is, a driveshaft repair shop might be able to weld in a new piece.

Andy, a few coincidences here: 1) our name, 2) our year truck, & 3) our problem. I had the exact same problem. My service department replaced the u-joints & driveshaft - there was a TSB for it. After they did this, it wouldn't "tick/click" as much when you loaded/unloaded the drivetrain, but the "tick/click" was barely noticeable.

They showed me their 2006 Chevy parts-truck that does the same thing. They then showed me a bulletin that mentioned this tick/click (after the u-joint & driveshaft is replaced) when the drivetrain is loaded and the sound comes from the rear-diff.

I've had these parts replaced a few months ago. I can barely hear this tick/click now, so yours should get quieter over time, parts probably need to be broken-in.

Thanks for the advice! I will update you when they fix it...

Andy,

I just got the truck back from the dealer for the driveshaft replacement. I can tell you that the noise is completely gone. It is silent. Im very happy with the results, since my driveshaft was VERY noisy. It almost makes me suspect a hairline crack of some sort in the old one, for a one piece all aluminum driveshaft to make noise like that!

At any rate, its all set.

did they replace it with another aluminum shaft or did they go iron on you?

I know this is digging up an old thread, but I'm finally finding out now that this is exactly what my truck does, alll the time. It is very obnoxious and very loud. Were yours replaced under warranty? If not, what did it cost?
