Bike Storage

Here is my afternoon project today. I bought to skewers from my local bike shop for around $40, I went to the Ace and got four screws about ¾ inch long, and two bolts that will fit into the holes where the tie downs are. I removed both tie downs and cut a 2x4 to 4ft. I drilled two holes about 2in from each end and bolted the board where the tie downs where. I measured the handle bars of my bikes and decided to place my skewers 12 ½ inches from the ends. I screwed them down with the four screws I bought. It will hold road bikes or mountain bikes out of the weather and helps keep honest people honest. And this just proves another reason why SUV's are better. :(

Looks pretty sweet. Especially if you do a lot of biking and traveling. The install looks great, but is the front where the bike is secured the only thing that is keeping it from leaning? I'm sure you know what you're doing, it just looks like something I would've checked to avoid bending something if I turned hard.

Too bad that would not work for me since I have 3 kids and 4 bikes... can't fit the kids and the bikes in a SUV, but all that will fit in my P/U. I guess that proves that real trucks are better. :(

It is set up the same way a bike rack that goes on your roof is. If the forks can take a 200 pound guy taking it off a jump it most certainly can hold up to sitting in a car. Thats why bikes are so expensive :(

I was worried about them leaning and the stress on my carbon fiber road bike from being mounted like that. But they stay put and in turns they don't seem to be taking alot of extra stress than from having a wheel there.

Make the kids ride on the running boards. :( They trash the car anyway. I don't have to worry about a backseat. There is only me and my girlfriend.

I had my carbon roady on a roof rack that secured the bike the same way. Driven 1000's of miles at freeway speed with it on there and never had a problem. Forks don't show any kind of cracking or damage at all.

There will be absolutely no problems with any undue stress, or any kind of leaning problems, as long as you tighten the fork mount down all the way. That's how most roof racks mount, and I have NEVER seen or heard of any kind of problem resulting from it (and I worked at a bike shop for a year and a half). If you think about it, it's putting the same stresses on the bike as the wheel being mounted does.

Here's my setup. Thule fork mounts on a 2x4, gets mounted with turn-buckles.

Nice

I've thought about doing something like that for the back of my truck. I do hate taking the front wheels off though. I know it's "easy" and "quick" and guys do it all the time, but it always seems like a PITA for me. :D

I'd like to find something for 2 bikes, standing upright in the box of the truck. :jester:

Yeah, well at least my roadie fork is only like $200, beats $800 for mountain bike forks.

I paid 800 for a used 4 wheeler. You are talking about 800 for bike forks wow.

My road bike is $4800 (Bianchi Carbon) and both of my serious mountain bikes are around $5000 (Giant Trance and Mesa).
