New Truck - Oil Spray/underbody Or Car Washes?

Hey everyone!

I just picked up a 2008 gmc sierra with GFX and I want to keep it looking sharp, but its already snowing up here in Alberta and there is salt out.

What do I do, should I have it oil sprayed for 100$ or just car wash the underside?

I'm paranoid about keeping my stuff in good condition whatever it is I own, and this truck is beautiful and I want to keep it that way! I hate salt!

I'm curious to know what % of people spray the undersides and what % don't do anything to their vehicles.

We used to use a suction sandblaster to spray bar & chain oil underneath and inside the doors. You may have to heat it or cut it with 10% kerosene to get it to spray, but it really kept the rust off the medal. Old Vermonter's trick and I must say it worked. Vermont uses tons of salt. Others here may have a better method.

i vote oil guard.. i'v only had my truck for a couple years... but my dad bought his 1996 sierra new, and has oil guarded it every year. the truck doesn't have a spot of rust, still look like new. but maybe he just got one with good metal!? anyways i always get mine oil guarded.. im anal like you and want it to stay looking new for a long time. if nothing else, i FEEL like my truck is guarded from rust when i leave the oil guard shop, and thats a great feeling!

Prior to delivery of the truck, I had requested it to be undercoated, and put it on thick in the tire wells. I plan on keeping this truck for a long time, and it is not a secret that the sheet metal is thinner then it used to be. So I am doing what I can to keep the sides from rusting out faster then they normally would.

On my last truck I never had it undercoated or treated with oil. Just had teh car wash spray the undercarriage and I never had rust issues. I plan on doing the same thing with this truck...
