Just Got My 07 Sierra. Anyone Pulling An Enclosed Car Trailer?

Hey All:

 

Just purchased a used 07 GMC Sierra crew cab shortbed 4*4. It's got 3.73 gears and a 5.3.

 

Anyone pull an enclosed car trailer with one of these? My tows would probably be about 100 miles over flat Illinois ground.

Iron or aluminum block? Mines Iron, but I do have the same engine and gears, did you get the HD trailing pack too?

I haven't looked, but I gather that since it's got the active fuel management that its aluminum block. I have a tow package, but I don't think I have the HD trailering deal. I have a hitch and pretty beefy looking trans cooler, but I don't have an integrated brake controller. What is in th HD package?

Mine has AFM and it's an Iron block...Aluminum block is generally when it has FLEX-FUEL.

Brake controller is not included in the HD trailering package. It is a stand alone option on '08+ trucks. The term "heavy duty" trailering package is misleading because these are light duty trucks to begin with. They also offer the "HD" trailering package with the 3.23 gears which is a joke.

 

I have a crew cab with the same engine/gear combination. Because crew cabs ares heavier than extended cabs, 3.73 gears are a must have for trailering anything over 4k lbs on this truck. I would keep the trailer weight to about 5k lbs limit, maybe 6k lbs on flat ground.

I have an aluminum block and its not flex fuel.. I pulled a Ford ranger ext cab on a tow dolly and the truck didnt even break a sweat. I would not be affraid to tow over 7500 lbs with these trucks. I do however recomend a brake controler when towing such heavy loads.

Even though the truck will tow 7500 lbs, I would probably not tow much more than 80% of that weight.

 

Definitely get a weight distribution hitch with a sway bar and look into some air bags for the rear. Add a full-size tranny cooler. I would also go with an LT type of tire in Load Range C rather than a P-metric.

 

Keep in mind that the gross weight of the truck will include anything you put in it when you take the trailer. Luggage, tools, race tire (if you are hauling a rece car), your passengers like the kids, the wife and/or girlfriend and the dog. All of this adds up quickly and it's easy to go right to the max gross weight or beyond it.
