08 Paint Peeling

Recommended Posts

I bought an 08 silverado in July and the paint on the rear axle housing has peeled off and is rusting! It hasn't been through any snow, salt, mud, or anything abrasive. I called my salesman at the dealership and he said he would get back to me on what the dealership would do, I haven't heard back. Has anyone else had this problem on their 08's?

Mine did not look nearly that bad but I had it off a couple weeks ago in order to change the rear diff fluid so I shot it with a coat of flat black krylon. I'd suggest this, though in your case it might be a little too late. If I were in your shoes I would see if they will order a new cover for you, and then paint and install it yourself. Besides it gives you a perfect chance to put some better rear diff oil in it.

"get back to you my ________ (back of my front)"

Take the car in. Indicate that you have a warranty issue... point it out, ask how long it will take to correct. If ya can leave it, leave it and ask for a loaner. If ya can't, ask for an appointment convenient to you, and tell em to have a loaner waiting.

Act confident, as though you will hear NO push-back, and act as though this is so obvious to anyone (which it appears to be to ME). Ya have to be PRO-active here.

If ya give 'em the out, they'll TAKE it.

That's a good idea about having a new cover ordered and painted. I bet they would have taken it in and thrown a coat of paint on it without even sanding the rust off. The service department at this dealership is the worst!

By the way, what's this better diff fluid you're talking about?

while mine isnt that bad it still has rust on it and the truck is only 1 month old. I will shooot a pic of it tonight or tomorrow. I know it will look that that after the first salting of the roads.

Fortunately it will not affect your vehicle mechanically but only be a blemish. Perhaps the location where the truck was stowed before getting to the dealer may have been harsh. Rust on the under carriage is normal and typically light brushing with wirebrush and spraying with rustoleum will do the trick.

Would be nice if they replaced cover but since it is not necessary it may not be covered under warranty. Let us know.

Either Royal Purple or Amsoil Severe Gear, take your pick.

I agree 100%, looks like you just got a cover that wasn't prepped/painted correctly. It happens, dealer should replace it for you no questions asked.

I'd bet getting them to replace a cover when yours needs a good coat of paint might be a stretch. When the truck is built, The axle supplier provides rear axles already assembled and painted. Apparently yours wasn't cleaned or prepared enough before it got sprayed with the cheap paint they use. I'd hit it with a wire brush and some good rattle can magic myself.

I will admit that is the worst looking relatively "NEW" rear cover I've seen.

WOW!

I think id be piss if that was happening to my truck

i just took a look at mine

so signs of rust or peeling paint

and i've had my rear axel buried in sand at the beach a couple of time

and stuck in mud

good luck

Rear diff has been overheated, cooking the paint off. You will need more then a new cover to do the job right.

You do not know that for sure.

Years ago i saw a brand new Chevy truck whose entire rear axle housing looked completely rusty.

Evidently they just spray paint over surface rust on some of these. While surface rust does not hurt the axle casting itself because of its thickness, the rear cover is just a thin piece of stamped sheet metal and it will eventually rust all the way through.

I will need to repaint the differential cover one on my truck as I have some rust coming from under the paint. It does not look anything like the one int he picture but it needs attention.
