Duramax Problem. Cant Figure It Out!

Over the past month my '01 duramax has been haveing some issues. Sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesnt. It will go a week acting fine then one time it just wont start. It cranks just doesnt turn over. I just replaced the batteries, and I changed a relay I thought might be causing the problem but no luck. It has been into the dealer twice delived on a flatbed and of course when they get it... it starts. They cant find a problem after a full diagnostic check. Any ideas? I cant use it or I may get stuck somewhere.

What do you mean by "cranks but doesn't turn over"? It will crank but not fire?

Cranking and turning over are the same thing.

Good point. It wont fire. It just cranks and cranks.

One of my customers had problems like this with his 2003. I seem to recall it was injectors. Seems to be a common problem that GM extended the warranty on them to 200,000 miles (?). He also mentioned the dealer spent much time trying to diagnos the problem, supposedly fixed it several time but they ended up replacing all the injectors so he says. His had 95,000 miles on it.

I'll ask the dealer about it but this truck only has 44,000 on it. Do the Injectors get plugged or is it another problem with them?

Not sure but I believe it has to due with high failure rates of the oem parts.

Here is some info I found but don't know if this relates to your issue. But I have several customers with these year vehicles and all have told me of injector issues with their trucks.

Another thing they have told me, of the 3 GM dealers in our area, all 3 suck when it comes to diesel engines, mostly on the job training with those dealers.

2001-2003Fullsize Pickups – Injector Replacement for High Flow RatesUse Corporate Bulletin04-06-04-007A for injectors with high fuel return rates. Use Special Policy 04039 for all 01-02 vehicles.Don’t replace 8 injectors for any complaint other than high fuel return rates. All other injector failures are fix as failed.Special Policy 04039

I have seen many failures of rubbed through fuel lines above the front of the tank, although its more prone to higher mileage units it causes a no code start failure that is intermittant, check to see if there is any deisel weeping from the front of your fuel tank, get right in there with a flashlight and check it out. also it is common for the fuel filter o-ring to fail or the filter to loosen, it will cause an air lock depending on atmospheric temps (intermittant no start) hope this helps > stump

I would have to say that its got to be the engine isn't get the fuel to fire. I once had a truck that did what your saying but also would run fine sometimes. What happened after may spark plugs and wire changes it was water from some bad fuel rusted my tank and sent some rust particles in to my ejectors and clogged them i hope this helps and good luck.

injectors are a common problem (noted mostly for 2001 and 2002), as well fuel filters must be changed regularly (15,000miles/20,000km)

Fuel filter is regularly changed and is due in about 2-5000mi. Dealer says injector problems would throw a code and that they are really expensive to just replace on a whim.

Is this only happening when it is cold outside or the motor is cold?

It started about a month ago when the temps were 40-50s and yes that I can tell it only does it on cold starts.

Not true, my injectors did not throw a code when they were dying. Sometimes that thing could crank and crank before firing. But my injectors were leaking fuel into the oil. And second off, they aren't paying for it. GM pays for it. If they won't help you find another dealer that will.

If it is only happening when it is cold outside then I would think its a glow plug problem. Like a bad glow plug or glow plug module. Something pretty simple to overlook. Other than that I :rollin:
