Loud Screeching

Lately since it has been cooler here in OKC-when I start my truck in the AM it chirps

at me after it cranks over...

 

well yesterday we got a cold snap with ice and when I started my truck to go home it started,

but instead of a chirp I got a long screech.

 

I popped the hood to see what it was but everything looked fine.

 

 

what could this be....

Serpentine belt is probably making the noise, but some belt dressing on it and see if that helps. I didn't think it was THAT cold.

The serpentine belt is a good candidate. It may be time to replace it. When I've had the screeching on start up (and goes away when warm), replacing the belt has fixed the problem.

Though belt dressing may have worked for you, I have not had any luck using belt dressing on a serp. belt. IMO, it just makes it worse. OP, get yourself a Gatorback belt, and I'd think your screeching would be a thing of the past.

the diagram is really faded... I looked at the belt, and it looks like I will have to take off my intake to get to the tensioner.

Should just need a 1/2 inch breaker bar. Nothing should need removed, well except for the belt. Maybe the intake tube for easier access, but not the intake manifold.

Wow that was easy.....

 

I took off the intake tube, used a 1/2 socket to pull the tensioner loose slipped off the old belt ----snaked the new belt in an started her up....

 

While I was in there I changed my Brake fluid too (DOT-4)

OK The Chirp is still there... The Belt did not get rid of that...

 

Unfortunately it is only on a cold start, so If I take it somewhere it wont happen.

I would guess its a bearing in the tensionor pulley.

I'd check and replace the A/C belt first, whether it's the source of the squeaking or not, chances are it's well past due for replacement. It's a cheap small belt, and was the source of a blood curdling screech on my truck that took months to figure out.

Braked fluid shouldn't be anywhere near the belt...did you mean power steering fluid?

 

If it was the brake fluid, did you bleed the brakes or just replce the fluid in the reservoir?

I know where the brake reservoir is... It looked a little dirty so I changed out the reservoir... I did not bleed

I'd WD-40 all spinning parts. Surely that'll nail it.
