Christmas Gift = New Exhaust .. Need Help

OK, I know this is getting redundant, seems like every day a new person starts a poll on which exhaust they should get, but screw it I am asking. So I've decided that a want some exhaust for my 2008 GMC Sierra 4.3L V6 .. I am looking to spend no more than say $550 before tax .. I had flowmasters on my previous truck, a V6 dodge ram, and was pleased with them .. Now my new dilemma, not sure if I want to go back to the flows or go with a bit milder magnaflow .. Any advice from seasoned vets would be much appreciated .. not even quite sure how much the Magnaflows sell for .. please advise me, having a tough time making a decision :D thanks guys

First off, there are TONS of threads on exhaust. However, the majority of them are for 4.8l and 5.3l V8s so I understand you wanting to know a bit more. Most of the opinions you get here are going to be based off of the V8 engines. The sound will be slightly different for the V6 and I know not many on this board will have a lot of experience with that.

I'll throw my two cents in and recommend the Magnaflow systems. I didn't do the entire catback for mine. I did a muffler swap and am very pleased with my result. This route is much cheaper, and really, is good enough unless you're doing some other performance work. My muffler I got online for around 100 bucks, maybe a bit more, and then my local shop welded it up for another 30 bucks. If you want the polished tip, that'll cost you a bit more to buy that too. You're going to hear everything from Magna, Flow, Borla, Corsa, and Gibson. You just have to bite the bullet with one and try it out. If buying your muffler locally, you can have your shop throw different ones on and off(without welding, of course) to hear the difference. I bought my Magnaflow blindly and am happy with my choice.

I started with a FM50 Delta Flow on my 5.3, and didn't like the drone in the cab (little too much for ME). The GM V8s are pretty loud with FMs, until you get into their 3-chamber mufflers.

Ended up getting a FM70 Big Block II for mine (to lower cab resonance), SOLD the 50 Delta to a buddy that has a V6 work truck (Chevy). He swapped his stocker for the FM50 Delta I sold him, and he likes it.

It sounds pretty good (we took her for a spin after he put the 50 on it).

The 50 on the V6 did NOT make the cab unbearable (now it is a RC) --- as a matter of fact, it didn't droan much AT ALL.

If I recall, the 50 Delta was about $120 or so --- install at my favorite muffler shop: about $40.

Hope this provides a little input for ya.....

I think I would go with something like a Dynomax or Magnaflow on the V6. V6 engines don't sound bad with a little rumble but a full out loud exhaust sounds funky on them (to me). You could probably do just a muffler swap for about $150.00

Well i'd like to get a single in, dual exhaust with some rolled tips either 45 degree or regular ... any opinion on that

MagnaFlow for sure. You can hear it and know it's there (quite a difference over stock, that's for sure), but it's not loud enough to sound redneck and piss off everyone. When you get on it, you'll have a nice, clean, deep sound. None of that hollow, crackly stuff like you get with Flowmaster. Not only that, but it's also stainless steel and won't rust out after three winters up north, which can't be said for Flowmaster.

im undecided between gibson single swept side cat-back or a similiar set up from magnaflow...

as much as i want a dual out, (like you) im not going to because it is after all a v6, and i dont want to try and fool ppl into thinking its a v8 or that i need a super sporty exhaust... and the single out set-ups seem to be a good amount cheaper (cat-back's)

anyways let me know what you decide on and take some before and after clips!

It would look nice. As long as it wasn't extra loud I'd go for it myself.

The MagnaFlow is higher quality and will look and sound nicer. I actually have a MagnaFlow SRSE myself. The benefit of that is that you retain more low end power and torque than if you got a dual.

Which way did you go, Stephen?

Well I decided that i was just to unsure of the magnaflows, from what I understood, you only hear those when you get on the pedal hard .. And shoot for my hard earned cah, i want to be able to hear those bad boys!! I had flows before and liked them so I went with the flows again .. Got me some Flowmaster - 40 Series - duals with some rolled tips .. Washed the hell out of my truck today so I could take some good pics and clips for you guys, only shitty thing is, didnt finish till about 5pm and the sun was already going down by that time, so I didnt care for how the pics came out .. I will post a couple right here but i am gonna take some better pics to put up this weekend .. hey daddy, the pacman experiments over in bug D huh, haha we both had bad seasons this year :D ,, but hey drew brees was named AP Offensive player of the year :sigh:
