Two years ago I added a add on wood furnace to help heat my home and I was wondering how many people do the same. I did it because i have a ton of dead fall wood and I thought rather that just burning all the wood in bon fires in summer and fall why not heat the house with it in winter! I have saved a ton of money in natural gas since I installed it!

I'm looking to get a heater for the garage, but it won't be wood. It's gets d@mn cold out there, especially when I want to work on my snowmobile.

I know there are some neighborhoods that frown on wood heat because they don't like the smoke

I have one of those "jet" heaters that will burn several fuels, it warms my 30x30x18 shop quite well (175,000 btu).

I bought it at Home depot on sale.

I use farm diesel in it.

I wouldn't think you would need to do much heating down there.

My guess is that it doesn't take too long to heat your garage!

I've got one of those too...If you're talking about the torpedo type heater anyway.

My problem with that is...You're supposed to ventilate for it (fumes are bad m'kay), and that lets all the heat out

Negative on the wood furnace. Can't have one in town. In fact, some townships are adopting ridiculous regulations in terms of the chimney around here.

There are some town ships that are banning the outdoor wood burners because when they go from the idle stage to the full burn they make a heck of a lot of smoke! I use the regular old brick chimney, it is tall enough that no one complains about the smoke.

My parents have been burning used engine oil in their furnace for over a year now. (Well, not in the summer :D ) They used to have a fuel oil (diesel) one, but my dad swapped out the injectors or whatever for these used oil ones. Actually works really well.

It only has to run a little to warm up the shop, plus it has a thermostat so I can fill it up and leave it for a day, knowing my shop temp is ok(not freezing).

That sounds VERY carbon friendly :D

Electric and gas here. Though in a couple of the houses we had while I was growing up had secondary wood heating.
