Can You Diagnose This?

2009 Silverado Crew Cap. 1037 miles. Since I got it after it sat for a while (hour or longer) a large amount of white smoke would come out of the exhaust when you cranked it up. I thought it was just "burning some of the new off". This has continued and today oil pressure dropped to 0 momentarily then returned to normal. This happened 3 or 4 times when at low RPM's. Now a check engine light has come on. It will be at the dealership first thing monday morning. Anyone want to speculate on what the issue is on this brand new truck. I will inform the board when I find out the answer monday morning/afternoon.

Could you please make your sig pic a little bigger? I can't quite make out what kind of truck you have (or how many pebbles are in the pavement?). :D

it sounds like a faulty oil pump, the fact that you see white smoke when you start your engine shows a lack of lubrication at start up, and you also have the drop to zero on the oil pressure gauge, take to the dealer asap.

This thread has been completely ruined by that obnoxiously large picture posted. I can hardly navigate around the screen enough just to make this post.

Jas please delete that crap, and OP welcome to the site, what they were trying to say is that your sig pic is too large. Please reduce the size in order to avoid future harassment.

And good luck with your truck.

If it is indeed the oil pump and you have lost pressure several times I would DEMAND a COMPLETLY different truck. Theres no telling what may have happened to that engine and with just over 1k miles who knows whats next. Maybe I'm just picky but I would always be worried something else would go wrong. Most likely just after the warranty is up.

 I'm still trying to figure out how a bad oil pump would make an engine put out a plume of white smoke on startup.

White smoke on startup usually is either oil in the cylinder (like radial airplane engine bottom cylinders) or large amounts of unburned fuel.

I'm guessing it's something really rare and strange that will take quite a while to diagnose.

Good point. However white smoke is usualy a sign of a coolant leak into the combustion chamber. Either way I wouldn't like the thought of owning a truck that was puffing smoke within the first 1000 miles. What is a large amount of smoke?

For the oil pressure to go to zero after it's running sure is a 'take it to the dealer asap' item to me too. That white smoke as well. There's no responsibility for the owner to diagnose it other than the dealers often play these things out for a long time to get them fixed.

I suppose getting a whiff of the 'white smoke' would be telling as to what it is; oil, coolant, or fuel. All have distinctive smells.

this reminds me of the faulty oil pumps on all the Chyrsler 2.7 liter engines on Intrepid/300M/LHS. white smoke does come out of the exhaust when the pumps fail. and yes i would demand a new truck

What makes it smoke when the pump fails?

Regarding demanding a new truck. GM will pursue fixing the problem first. That may include rebuilding or replacing the engine. I was driving a friend's new Ford turbo diesel when it sucked a few injector nozzles and started to die. Ford had the dealer rebuild the engine, which surprised me. But, it's their option to decide what the remedy is...until you pursue arbitration or litigation. I don't see GM offering to replace the truck.

An oil pump has exactly nothing to do with smoking at startup. White "smoke" is most likely water vapor (a common thing in cooler weather). I'm betting on a cluster or gage issue. Actual zero oil pressure usually results in more obvious issues.
