Good news for those enthusiasts looking to buy a new pickup truck from General Motors, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra half ton trucks are now shipping with a 3.73 rear axle option and new 6.2 liter V8 engine. GM spokesperson Kelly Wysocki commented "The first GM full-size pickups with 6.2-liter V-8 engines and 3.73 rear axles started shipping from the factory in late January" and "they should start arriving at dealers very soon. The 3.73 can be ordered as part of the Max Trailering Package option". GM's new 6.2 liter V8 packs 403 horsepower and 417 foot pounds of torque, matched with a six speed automatic transmission, the new motor and axle combination is only available on crew cab configurations. The new 3.73 rear axle option replaces the standard 3.42, which was optimized for fuel economy standards.

They did use 4.10's on the '06 to '08 4x4 VMAX trucks with the "NHT" package.

I was hoping they would a few weeks ago when I found out they were only planning on 3.42s! At least we can find something positive in these bad times for GM!

Yep I got the 4.10's

Don't forget, even with 3.42s the first gear of the 6L80 is already lower than the first gear of the 4L65-E with a 4.10. Just to put that into perspective, a 6L80 would have to have a 3.12 (yes, I know that doesn't exist) to have the same first gear ratio as a 4L65-E with a 4.10. That's a HUGE difference! With a 3.73 it's first gear will be nearly 32% lower than a 4L65-E's with a 4.10. It'd be stupid to put anything higher than a 3.73 with a 6L80, you'd be sacrificing all of your higher gears for nothing.

that is really nice and low...but in all fairness, I did not know that.

yea im kinda curious to see how these trucks are going to run with 3.73s.

The 6L80E and 3.42s is equivalent to a 4L60E with 4.56s stock...

The 6L80E and 3.73s is going to be like having a 4L60E with a lower gear than 4.88s stock.... Combine that with the 400+ HP of the 6.2L and I wouldn't want to be driving that truck in 2WD on a rainy day :dunno:

I don't think it's as simple as the "just the 1st gear ratio". When towing, you care about the ratios in 3rd, 4th and 5th on the 6-spd, and 2nd/3rd/4th on the 4-spd. The 3.73 offers a better rpm range for towing in hills, etc. on both setups, but I suspect most folks who tow less than 6k lbs will be happy with either.

Yeah, or more precisely a 4.50. With the 6L80 and 3.73, the 4L65-E would have to have a 4.91 to be the same. Just think of what 4WD low will be like! As for driving it on rainy days, don't forget that TM all but eliminates the idea of burnouts. :dunno:

Well of course not, but I was just using first gear as an example. A six-speed will be far more efficient in that it has many two more ratios to choose from than the four-speed. The more gears the better for towing, as it's easier to find the correct gear; just look at big rigs. And yes, the 3.73 will definitely be better for towing, but I'm not sure how needed it is compared to how needed it is for a 4L65-E.
