2008 5.3 Engine Ticking

I believe there is a TSB out about the AFM lifters making noise on cold start up. Last I heard, GM was still 'in development' with the replacements.

Yeah I sometimes get that first thing in the morning, but it's not really anything I'm too concerned about. Never had a problem beyond the tick before with an LS motor.

I thought GM classified a tick at startup as normal and only considered it as a problem when it lasted more than a minute? Mine ticks at startup pretty regularly, but goes away within two seconds or so.

That is correct per the AFM lifter TSB.

The longest mine has ticked is 45 seconds, and that was after is sat outside for 12 hours in sub-zero temps. It hasn't done it since.

So, I sold my 2000 Silverado with a 5.3 and the typical piston slap ticking on start up. Now I have a 2008 CC with the 5.3 and AFM and now I can look forward to that ticking also? Can't GM build a %$@ truck that doesn't sound like it's filling the oil pan with random parts on start up? I hope ALL the manufacturers suffer REAL bad during this time and wake up and start offering a quality product for a change!
