Silly Tire Pressure Monitoring

Recommended Posts

So OnStar has been emailing me vehicle diagnostics, and almost every time I get one, the report complains about the tire pressure.

My tire pressure varies at least 5-6 lbs depending on whether I have been driving, the time of day, and the temperature outside. I'm near Philly, and the outside temps have varied wildly from below freezing to 60 the last couple days.

Although I ignore the tire pressure reports, I'm wondering how many obsessive people

go nuts airing and deflating tires just to make Onstar happy? That's pretty funny.

Anyone else think this much information is just silly?

I don't have an onstar subscription, BUT I do monitor my tire pressure regularly. I think you will find quite a few guys on here that do. For me, I will not let them vary more than a couple pounds. For sure not 5-6 lbs. It's just good practice for both safety, tire wear and ride quality. If I have an extra 2lbs in my tires, there is a noticeable difference in ride.

No on-star for me either, but I do monitor the tire pressure. I try to keep them on the upper side of inflation. Door say 34 front and 38 rear,... I'm usually 35 and 40psi average.

I agree with this, but I agree with the OP about temperature swings. It's impossible to consistently keep your pressure at exactly 38psi when it's 0°F in the morning, and 60°F in the afternoon. Even after running extremely cold tires on the road, their pressure will go up.

If it's cold outside and my pressure is 32psi, I don't sweat it.

I don't use OnStar, but I am sure they would have a cow...I run mine at 50 psi.

May I ask why 50 lb.? I also like to run mine a little higher than recommended. I run about 40 lbs but have never gone higher. Any benefit to running higher than 40 lb? I only have 6k on my truck so still have the factory tires.

Thanks

Kenny
