I am liking Fox's broadcasts of NASCAR this year.  Can't really put a finger on why, but I have been watching a ton more racing this year than I ever have before.

I like Waltrip in the booth too.  It is nice to hear a guy that has been down on that track not too long ago and really knows what is going on.  The fact that he knows all the racers styles of driving and can integrate them into his anouncing makes it more interesting.  Not too often do past sports stars that take up announcing do a very good job, but to this point I find it enjoyable.

Yeah that's something else, I've watched every single race so far from flag to flag. I missed 4 races at this point of the season last year. I wonder how long I'm going to keep this streak alive.

But, it's coming at a price. I've only seen the Nashville and Daytona Busch Races.

And Just the Daytona Truck Race.

I think DW does an excellent job in the booth.  Too many sports anouncers are boring, his fiery personality really adds to the race.  And he does know what's going on down on the track.  Too many times on other networks in previous years I heard announcers saying things they they had no idea what they were talking about.  They were just hired by a big cable tycoon who couldn't get anybody better.  I think Fox did a great job picking their people.

I think DW does a great job.  I've always liked him as a driver and now as an announcer.  I always liked Benny Parsons and Bill Weber from the other networks.  I think it's a tie between Ken Squire and Chris Economaki (back when he covered races) as the absolute worst!  Sometimes I wondered if Ken Squire was watching the same race that the rest of the world was.

I love Darrel, but I'm not pleased with Fox's camera work. Too often, we hear the announcers describe a situation (crash, pass, smoke, etc.) that we can't see. That didn't happen with ESPN and TNN

I've got to admit, the quality of coverage by Fox has really suprised me this year.  I was kind of worried it would be a big drop off from ESPN, but it really hasn't been to bad.

I like listening to ole DW and Larry McReynolds in the booth.  They are a good combo.  Much better then Ken Squier, Chris Economaki, and Buddy Baker.

I like DW up there.  I have always liked him since I can remember.  When they were here in Texas in 99 when DW was driving the #1 car he was the only driver to wave back when the drivers came back in from the track during practice.  My brother and I with other people were standing in a row beside the gate and we could have smacked the car as they went buy we were so close.  The only other driver that did anything was Jeff Gordon when he was coming in he could see my brother and another girl with cameras ready and you could see the front end dive from hitting the brakes so they could get a picture.  And I as well have seen every race this year.  I will continue as long as the wife allows.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
