How can I test or check if the oil sending unit is the problem or the instrument gauge? started to see oil gauge go high and then next day shows normal, then the next day reading high close to 100%. noticed when I start the gauge does not always go to zero first to start. sometimes will not go to zero and this is when it reads high? 2004 Sierra 2500HD only 15K miles

Have you had the instrument panel replaced by GM yet? '04 is one of the years that had the screwy panels. Several of my gauges would act up. Not all at the same time. Oil was one of them. Speedo and fuel also. If your under 70k you might look into it.

do you have oil pressure? about 40 at idle? does it go up to about 70 at WOT? if so normal. where it rests with key off doesnt mean anything.

if you have a question if your motor has oil pressure. if your motor is starting to rap chances are you have no oil pressure.

oil pressure sometimes shows 80psi at idle and sometimes 45psi which has been normal. No noise from motor.

Keep in mind that the oil pressure will be a lot higher at idle when it is cold and drop when it gets hot. Also, the oil pressure gauge is more of an indicator than an accurate pressure gauge.
