Front Swaybar For '74 C-10 2wd?

Hi-

I have to rebuild the front end on my 1974 Chevy C-10 2WD shortbed so that I can get a state vehicle inspection sticker. When the guy at PST asked what the diameter on the swaybar was, I went "DUH" since after all these years, I had no idea.

 

Cut to the chase: I went out and crawled under the truck and there is no sway bar and no evidence that there ever was one there. In my Chilton's, one of its "typical" illustrations shows that they were installed. I even looked under my '69 Impala to see about where Chevy attached the bushings to the frame and checked my truck again but could find nothing.

 

Does anybody know if these trucks had one? Would it be recommended to try to install one for better handling or better to leave well enough alone? Just for grins, it is an original 350 with a 2 barrel rochester and manual saginaw trans with 3.73 rears.

I have a '77 GMC 3/4t. and it definately has a sway bar. 1 1/8 dia. IIRC and do help with the handling.

I did some searching in one of my manuals and found this...it was in my '67-'82 Haynes....hope it helps

Thanks for the help. Looks like those brackets that the sway bar bushings mount to are key to the success of this project. Unfortunately, they are not on my frame rails. I bought it about 19 years ago and have made no modifications. But who knows what went on prior to me having it.
