Guest Friz Posted June 24, 2001 Posted June 24, 2001 I remember about 15 years ago, some reporter was interviewing Junior Johnson and asked his opinion on Riverside, Cal. and Watkins, Glen, NY. (for you young guns and new fans, Riverside used to be the WC road course in the West) Junior said (live on National TV), "Runnin' a stock car on a road course is kind of like masturbatin'. It's a lot of fun, but nobody wants to watch you do it." I thought I was gonna wet my pants, and the reporter lost it as well. More info for the new guys; Junior was one of the winningest owners in WC history. He was Darrel Waltrip's owner for all of his championships (I think). He also owned and crewchiefed for Bill Elliot, Neil Bonnet, Jimmy Spencer, Bobby Labonte, and a host of other drivers. He was a character!
bowtiefan Posted June 24, 2001 Posted June 24, 2001 lmfao. But i really do like watching the road courses. I go to watkins gle nevery year to watch them run there. #### im only 2 hours away from the gle neasy to get to. go gordon.
Kansas Kid Posted June 24, 2001 Posted June 24, 2001 Man, that is hillarious! Wonder if they would let you say that on T.V. nowadays? I really don't care much for road courses, but if I had to choose one Watkins Glen would be my choice. It is a much faster track, and seems like it is more conductive to stock cars then Sonoma....
MountaineerTom Posted June 24, 2001 Author Posted June 24, 2001 Thats funny! I love to listen to Junior Johnson tell stories. When Elliot drove for him, we stopped at his race shop, near N. Wilkeboro, and they let us roam all over the race shop. That's when Sterling Marlin drove for him too. We were able to video Elliot's and Marlin's crew cjief's, Tim Brewer and Mike Beam talking about and working on the cars with the crew. It was pretty cool.
76BBSub Posted June 25, 2001 Posted June 25, 2001 I loved the road course racing on Sunday...I usually get bored watching NASCAR on the ovals. Go fast, turn left, you know the deal, but I watched the entire race yesterday from start to finish, glued to the TV, even my wife was getting into it. BUT, for you true NASCAR fans I can see why you might disagree with me, it's definitely a different kind of racing. Jeff
General Lee 01 Posted June 30, 2001 Posted June 30, 2001 I love Road Courses. Where else can you get the car airbourne and not be in too much trouble. I like it when they hit the curbs and get the whole side of the car off the ground.
