Low Rpms When Stuck

I own a 2008 2500HD.So the other day I had parked on the side of the road in a grassy and very soft area. I was towing a small landscape trailer with a small 1 ton roller on it and also had a small load in the back of the bed (also a dump insert). So I go to pull out and see that I am getting stuck so I switch into 4 wheel drive and to my suprise I was only able to acheive at max 2000rpms. My tires were spinning and digging myself deeper, but I had no power above that range. :D This also happened about 3 weeks ago when I had to pull somone out of the mud when they were offroadding. Completely empty truck....and no trailer of course! I had absolutly no power.

Is there some sort of rev limiter that i am unaware about? I also own a 2003 2500hd and this is never an issue. It's almost like there is some sort of traction control taking over but I have no switch to turn it off! Please let me know if there is something that can be done or if its just my truck thats screwed up! :rollin:

Traction control?

that will cut power when it senses slip.

Mine has a switch, I forget exactly what it says but it's down low below the radio.

Welcome to the site.

Well I have a 08 as well, I have never had that happen to me, My truck has traction control on the Allison trans place the truck in 2nd gear per the manual that I have for the Allison/duramax combo. That could be what is going on, you may also have the G80 locking rear as well. Spinning tires do not help in getting unstuck in my experience, so it may be the computer preventing damage to the drive train when you suddenly gain traction. Maybe another more educated person will jump in here and provide some better info for ya.

As for the 09 gas truck I could not tell ya if they have a separate traction control switch.

If you were spinning the tires more power will only dig you deeper. 2000 rpm in low gear is spinning them pretty good.

Before I had it removed the factory torque management would not let me apply full power. I pulled a loaded dump trailer and stopped in a tire rut. I got "stuck" with out even spinning tires. I could apply full throttle but not be able to even spin the tires or move. Felt like power braking. Using 4low will get you out of this situation.

Spinning the tires is a good way to get you stuck deeper.

If the TM is your problem you will need a tune to modify/eliminate it. Be advised it is there to protect the drivetrain from inexperienced drivers. If you remove it you will need to be careful applying the power.

Don't forget also that your G80 may not have locked up due to the speed, above 20mph or so, it will not lock up. Also alot of people get on and off the gas and this locks and unlocks the G80 and causes people to have problems when getting unstuck. Overall you have to stay steady on the gas and as you feel the rear lock, you have to stay on the gas at a constant, and keep the overall tire speed below 20 mph, until you get yourself out.

This is the button I was talking about...

I don't think I have that button on my 2008 2500HD.

Well, if I hit that and stand on it, it leaves 2 nice black stripes, I know that for a fact :D

I thought my '08 2500HD 4x4 was pretty well loaded, but I don't have that button either.

    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
    • So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
