Tire And Spare Tire Questions...

Just bought a used 2008 Ext. Cab Silverado LS with 22,000 miles. The tires on it now are in pretty poor condition, very cut up, cracked, and wore out etc..., it appears it was driven on a lot of gravel / rough roads. Anyway, they are P265/70/17 Goodyear Wrangler ST's, which I assumed were the original tire since they are wore out and the truck has only 22,000 miles. So in an effort to possibly save a few dollars I thought I would just buy 3 tires and use the spare as the 4th new one, so I looked under the truck to make sure the spare was the same and in good condition before I bought tires but to my surprise its not! The tire under the truck is a new Goodyear Wrangler HP. My question is, has the previous owner went through two sets of tires in 22,000 miles or did the truck come with a different spare tire than the other four tires???

Nope,The owner probably didn't go through 2 set of tires.

The truck most definitely came with a different spare tire,This has been common on GM trucks now for years. (Either the spare tires a different brand, different model,or a different size)

My road tires were the P265/65R18 Bridgestone Dueler AT "RHS"s However the spare that came with my truck is a P265/70R17 Goodyear Wrangler AT/S.

Well since the spare tire rim is differant then whats on your truck they will have to break down the spare to get the tire off and then remount and balance one of the old tires on the spare tire rim which will cost extra so your better off just getting 4 new tires and leave the spare alone. You might save a few bucks buts thats about it.

Yeah,You don't want the Wrangler ST's back on it anyway.

Even though I love Goodyear's and will run nothing but them,The Wrangler ST's are JUNK! They don't belong on a 2wd truck let alone a 4x4,The problem is they have too "tight" of a tread pattern.

Thanks for the replies guys, thats very strange about the different spare tires, I guess it saves GM a few dollars somewhere. I'm not going to buy 3 and use the spare unless its going to save me atleast $50 or so. Then I dont know if its even worth it if the Wrangler HP is not going to be a decent tire.

The Wrangler HP isn't a bad tire,I thought you wanted to put the Wrangler ST's back on....That I wouldn't do!

That being said...The Wrangler HP isn't going to be a great tire for a 4x4,Its more of a "performance tire" suited for an SUV,or a lowered truck.

With the tires being worn out at 22K on an 08 model... I'm a little skeptical. They certainly should NOT be cracked and worn out. I'd bet the previous owner swapped them out and kept the newer tires... maybe for another truck he had? I believe the spare would have been the same tire as the original.... but apparently Rich has dispelled that rumor!

It doesn't surprise me at all that there worn out at 22k,As I said...The Wrangler ST's are not a very good wearing tire, although just like with other tires some people get good wear, and some don't.

What type of mileage should I expect out of my Goodyear Eagle LS2's? Live in So Cal, all paved roads, 60/40 city highway driving. These are the OEM tires for my 20" stock rims (275/55/R20) on my 2wd ext cab. Not much wear at 17k so far except for some very slight edge-wear. I notice a lot of people seem to love those Michelin LTX A/S, and the LTX M/S for an AT tire, but they're very pricey.

Where your at (So Cal) and the road conditions (nice and smooth I'm sure) you should do real well with wear,Around here where the roads are horrible (rough, lots of potholes) I don't think guys are getting much more than 15-20k out of the Eagle LS2's.

I don't think the LS2's belong on trucks either though,Just my .02

I agree with you about the tire not being on a truck. Any recommendations for a good replacement tire - either a good A/S or a decent A/T? Do you like the Firestone Destination LE or A/T??

Actually, I dropped the spare out of my 2008 Sierra today for another project I'm working on and it is, in fact, the Wrangler HP.

My truck has different size rim for a spare and different tire than the factory road tires on my truck.

and my truck is factory stock except a few cosmetic mods to the truck.

it (spare) was even listed as a different size on the window sticker.

my dealer could not answer my question as to why, other than thats the way they come.

I asked could i buy a another wheel steel or the fancy street wheel and put it up where the spare is and he could not answer that question either.

street tires are 265/70/17 and the spare is a radius 16 and some other size that i do not remember.

So it is quiet possible all the tires are the stock factory stuff.
