2 Month Old Fuel Pump Whining Again

Recommended Posts

Hi the fuel pump started whining and the next day quit so I replaced it with a new carquest one about 2 months ago then a few weeks later the PO449 code came up and truck starting bogging when cold so I ordered the parts for new evap valve and canister friday but on the weekend the fuel pump started whining again today I put the valve and canister in but the pump is still whining would this be caused by the bad evap vent and a sign the pump is on its last leg again? or maybe just a bad pump, thanks

 The 1999 does have a inline fuel filter, driverside inside frame rail.

Where is the fuel pump on a '99? I ask because with those on the bottom of the tank, letting the tank get extremely low can potentially cause them to overheat and prematurely fail.

You're right...The pump is in the tank...Lubricated and cooled by the fuel.

I have only had good luck with the GM fuel pump, all the aftermarket pumps seem to only last a few months.

One of our pumps for a GM product would be a Delphi unit which is OE. Some of our applications are Bosch with a few being Airtex. We use all three vendors for our product offering enabling us to offer an OE mfg'd pump for almost any vehicle.

Our warranty rate with Delphi is almost nothing. Not to say they cannot have a defect.

It sounds terrible to say but many know exactly what I am talking about when I say, some pumps are noisy. If you have noticed, there have been times where you would see a 6 month old vehicle with the pump whining.

If it is excessive and bothering you, check with the store where you bought the pump and I am sure he will warranty it if necessary.

Maybe a Tech will add more information to this thread.

X2...I've had a couple of trucks that the fuel pump whined from day one. My '02 was loud as hell but was still going strong at 90k miles or so (when I got rid of it).

GM Fuel pumps are not that great, I bought the Carter design, I was sold on them using a newer and more robust turbine pump and a new better filter. Clean Screen they called it. Its quiet works very well and 10,000 miles old.

If you run any electric fuel pump out of fuel or run your tank low on fuel they will fail very soon. Running these dry will destroy the pump in as little as 30 seconds since they are fuel lubricated. Don't do a dry test before putting it in your tank.

Remember even with a 1/4 tank if you park on a grade the pump may see a dry start condition.

Make sure your tank is clean, dirt in the tank will plug your new filter causing excess load on the pump and early failure.

If your old filter is dirty and brown in color you can see you are pumping dirty fuel, maybe you need another gas station as yours seems to provide dirty fuel. Pumps today are supposed to have filters in the pump but dirt is coming from somewhere.

The above posts very correctly said to change your inline filter, good idea, keep it clean too but remember if it is dirty you have already pushed that dirt through your pump, dirt in the pump causes pump failure.

These GM trucks are very well known for having poor electrical connectors, it is recommended you replace the connector when you replace the pump. Newer designs from AC Delco, Airtex and Carter all give you a new design that is more robust and avoids this problem. A bad connector is usually visible with a slight burning between the electical wires in the plug, this causes low voltage and pump failure. There are many bulletins out covering these items.

Good luck, hope you find something useful to solve your problems.

I just cannot tolerate something that makes a noise that it should not be making... in my opinion, anything mechanical like that is just setting itself up for early failure.

I had a new fuel pump installed in May in my 97 C2500 5.7L Vortec, as the fuel pressure got too low for the engine to start properly. The new pump whined and squeeled from the first day and my mechanic asked me to wait a while to see if it would become quiet. Mechanic said that he had never had one make that kind of noise before and had no explanation other than it may have to be replaced. The noise got worse on the hot days, and not too bad on the cool mornings. So now, I got the fuel pump (Airtex E3270) replaced yesterday no charge on warranty. Runs quiet like it should.
