I have a 2004 GMC Yukon XL and like many of the members I am having trouble with the 4wd. The neutral light stays on when I turn the car on and or the 4hi or low and I cant switch it back to 2wd. I was reading the post and I see that many of the readers have the same problem. I took it to the dealer and he said it was the Encoder Motor Actuator that had a short probably because I dont use the 4wd too much and when it did snow I used it and whatever. He said it would cost $985. the part was 557 plus labor.

My question is what is a Code?

one of the answers to this same problem was get a code and that will tell you what the problem is.

well I took my car to the GMC service would they give me a code? and how many numbers would it be would it be on the diagnosis?

When "service 4wd" flashes in your message center a code is saved in the computer just like the check engine light

From what you described it sounds like you need the encoder motor sensor.... About 80 bucks in parts and it took me 45 minutes to do in my driveway.

Dealerships don't like replacing the sensor.... Because its easier to replace the whole motor and they get more money.

Do a search for C0327 and posts by me, I recall posting the part numbers here before (on my cell so I can't do the search now)

but how can I retieve that code from the service dept or auto repair shop.

the sensor repair sounds SOOO much better that $985. I should have married a mechanic. I cant trust any of them. I will search now thanks
