Cousin Carl Gets His Wings

If you didn't see it yet, check out Carl Edwards' little flight today at Talladega. He usually saves his back-flips for when he wins, but now he's taking it a little too far. :D Only bad thing is eight people got hurt in the grandstand. :wtf:

It was also good to see Busch get what he deserved today. Does anyone like this guy, or is he just one of the guys you love to hate? :P

What say you?

The last I heard, 6 of the 8 injured people (in the grandstands) had been treated and released. One person was sent to one hospital, complaining of chest pains. (I can't imagine what could've caused 'chest pains,' seeing a car fly at you at nearly 200 mph and cash into the fence in front of you... and it not KILL you.) Another was sent to a different hospital... "potentially for a broken jaw," I believe is what was said.

I hope all of the spectators are fine and/or heal up well.

Carl brought the wreck onto himself. I can see trying to block once, but twice? That's just asking to get turned.. :D

Shrub? Anytime he doesn't win or doesn't finish is a good day, in my book! :P

Restrictor plate racing just irritates me. I knew this race would be a blood bath (racing wise) on the track...I wasn't going to watch it but I tuned in time just to see that lap 9 wreck. So I'm sitting there betting they would not end it under caution...sure enough with a couple to go they green flag it again. And this is the aftermath. NASCAR should consider themselves very fortunate because if a fan died from this crash they would be shut down.

Restrictor plate racing is just not safe and never will be. You need to give the cars separation, let them have enough power so they HAVE to get on the brake every corner to control themselves. Instead they are forced to glue themselves to the bumper in front of them, and drive with the pedal to the floor all the way around.

I understand without the plate the cars would hit 230mph and a 3,400lb. car crashing at that speed is even worse. They have some decisions to make about this style of racing, maybe they need to shorten talledega/daytona instead of looking for ways to screw with the racing.

I actually changed the channel after Kenseth took out a number of top drivers. I flipped it back and forth during commercials, and did watch the last 10 laps. I'm not a Carl Edwards fan, but I admire the way he got out of his demolished car, and ran across the finish line. As for "Shrub", I can't stand him, but the summabitch can drive.

Now, now, you know that these comments are just mean spitited towards NASCAR. :D I mean afterall, they have to keep the cars as equal as possible so they all have a chance at winning. You really would not like to see any team/teams do their own research and build a car that would be superior to any others on the track now would you? How much fun would it be to see someone be much faster than the others?

In case you cannot tell, I am sick :P of Nascar and their restrictor plate cookie cutter cars. If I want to see car racing, I go to my local dirt track on Saturday night. They love it when a car or cars are faster than the others. (Imagine that) You know after all is said and done, it is supposed to be racing and the object is to go faster than the other cars, not the same speed. :wtf:

Well, as best as I can tell, the object of NASCAR is to "put on a good show" and make money -- and not necessarily in that order. Having more competitors running closer together, performance wise, helps keep "the show" more interesting, which helps the ratings, which brings in the sponsors, which makes them money.

Unless a spectator was killed yesterday, I don't see restrictor plate racing going away anytime soon... And even if a fan died in the stands yesterday, from the last lap wreck, NASCAR would probably work to reinforce the fences, not change the cars, the engines, etc..

That's my take on it at least... :withstupid:

Michael, I think you just summed it up. :withstupid:

NASCAR = "A show" kind of like the WWF

Saturday Night Dirt Track = Car Racing which would be the equivalent to Cage Fighting if comparing to another sport.

Don't get me wrong, I still watch it from time to time but it really does nothing for me as it did when they ran cars that at least had some resemblance of a "stock car".

Do you think that it would be better for manufacturers if they went back to that era, when the companies made cars available to the public, just so they could race them in NASCAR. Might bo great for business. Would love to see the new Camaro hauling ass around the track against the Challenger.

Not only better for the Mfgs but also better for NASCAR as well.

I think it all started back in the early 80s with the T bird. Ford did a good job designing a very slick body that had great aerodynamics. They kicked butt and took names. Some people complained and NASCAR allowed other makes to alter their rear spoiler or ride height or whatever. This went on and on and back and forth between the mfgs and it got out of hand all in the name of "fairness".

Well, I don't know that I'd go so far as to compare it to the WWF. But, it is a lot more about "the show" than it used to be. When they started figuring out that keeping it close increased the tension and excitement and that fans enjoyed that more than "the leader has lapped the whole field 3 times, so far.. and the race isn't even over yet," I think that changed a lot of fundamentals in the type of racing they put on the track.. I think that also led to a lot of the rules we have now, the more IROC-style cars, etc.

Personally, for me, I like the new car better. To me, it put things back more in the hands of the drivers than the previous car did, where you were ALWAYS hearing about wind tunnels and making the bodies slicker, etc. Yes, now you hear about the post machines and the engineering of the motors and suspensions. But, at least that isn't "completely" about who can create the most downforce. It seems like it has shifted back to handling and horsepower..... (just don't make "too" much or NASCAR will find a way that you cheated and dock you some points!)

From what I've seen, though, this new car can be driven harder and can be beat on more than the old car could .. and it still keeps going and it's still competitive. I am not a fan of Kyle Busch, but there was a race last year, where he kept sliding up against the outside wall (sometimes not exactly 'gently') and he just kept going. The old car... once or twice of that and he would've been off the pace and probably ended-up a few laps down, if not in the garage area, parked for the day..

I think there's still a lot to learn about how hard these guys can push these new cars to get the most out of them. I also think yesterday's Talladega race, with those 2-car breakaways may lead to some different styles of racing, in the future, if other drivers figure out what those guys were doing. :nono:

Ok, I'll go back to being quiet now... for now.. at least for a few minutes!
