Viper 5901 Alarm Install ..

Recommended Posts

Well I have my birthday coming up in a few weeks and I am looking to get an alarm installed on my truck. I have been loving the Viper 5901 and the cheapest I can find it is on amazon for $245.00, shipped. I was estimating a local shop would be able to do the install for around $100 to $150. Boy was I wrong. I started calling local shops today and the cheapest price I have found is $325.00 for the install alone!! This is kind of blowing my mind. I really want the 5901 because of the 2 way keypad but really cant justify paying $300 plus dollars to get the damn thing installed. Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? I have a single cab truck. I figure the install cant be all that difficult. Would I be able to install it myself? Looking for any advice, Thanks

if it were me i'd leave the install up to the professionals. with newer trucks a lot of the install charge is getting the alarm to play nice with your truck's ECM, BCM, etc.

random rant: i parked next to a late 90's hyundai the other day that had an alarm with proximity detection. as soon as i stepped out of my truck the damn alarm went off. dipshits with $2000 cars and $5000 worth of audio equipment and over-sensitive alarms irritate me. if you get an alarm equipped with a proximity detector don't use that option.

I called up a few shops in my area. I was quoted $900 for removal of the last system and installation of the new system. And if anything goes wrong, just bring it back and they will fix it. Customer service FTW!

Damn man I guess these install prices are accurate .. Just seems crazy to have to pay $350 to install an alarm on a single cab truck

I have installed 100's of alarms and starters. It is ALL in the bypass. Buy the right one and it is a 12 wire 40minute install. Programing is a little tricky. And with out a Bitwriter you are blocked out of a ton of options. I have a Python LCD 2way I still haven't installed. But I am running all aftermarket audio,alarm,ect.. off a dual battery isolated system so it is a little different.

If you think you haver the know how DO IT. B/C when you are stuck on the side of the road or alarm stops you from starting the truck if you don't know what to do you are F***ed.

I allways let the owner see the install before I install the dash panels. And show them where the vallet switch is and the way it all works.

Oh the right bypass can do heated seats,heat/ac,windows up,lights, start, tac,OEM alarm,ect..... ALL in ONE wire DATA.

I have the viper 5901 in my silverado. I also bought it on amazon a shop around here charged me $150 to install it. I also have a proximity detector, They can be truned down so there not as sensitive. Your going to also need a Xpresskit bypass, that bypasses your factory alarm but still using the door locks ect. My grand total was $500. By the way the remote start is good to have and you also have a 1 mile range. Good luck.

You might find out while shopping around that the cost of the alarm plus install will not be far off from what an authorized dealer will charge you all together. It will be worth it in the long run to have that lifetime warranty on both the labor and alarm, something you will not get if you buy elsewhere and install yourself. Also keep in mind if you do the install that there is a possibility of frying your trucks electrical system. Those costly repairs will come out of your pocket. If a shop has that issue they will have to incur the repair costs.

I have to agree with this. They don't want to lose any future customers and keep current customers. I end up shopping around and checking out reviews of the shop before hand. Most of the places in my area are pretty good, some aren't so good but still offer good service.

First off, thanks for the great thread everyone...

Williard,

I have installed 100's of alarms and starters. It is ALL in the bypass. Buy the right one and it is a 12 wire 40minute install. Programing is a little tricky. And with out a Bitwriter you are blocked out of a ton of options. I have a Python LCD 2way I still haven't installed. But I am running all aftermarket audio,alarm,ect.. off a dual battery isolated system so it is a little different.

I am thinking of going with the Python 991, which sounds like the same thing you've got. I have done a few Bulldog remote starts without security, and one Hornet with remote start and security. The bulldogs were easy, but the bypass on the hornet got to my head a little bit. I have checked with xpresskit.com, but I am still unsure of what I need. I will be installing the Python on a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 LT. Is the XK06 the correct module? What about the other two devices they show? Do they do the same job with added features?

Oh the right bypass can do heated seats,heat/ac,windows up,lights, start, tac,OEM alarm,ect..... ALL in ONE wire DATA.

Does this mean that with the bypass installed, your heated seats can come on automatically if the user chooses?

Also, Bulldog offers the additional "T-Harness" accessory, which in my opinion is a great investment, does anyone know if DEI offers a similar product? Please chime in if you have an advice, opinions, or thoughts. Thanks!

EDITED:

When I finished with my post here I continued with some research over here: http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/index.php?...python&st=0 I am under the impression that the 1701G Bypass module controls all sorts of cool stuff. For example, it will unlock/lock doors without tapping in to the wires going to the doors, which is what I had to do on the Bulldogs. Is this correct?
