All,

I'm hoping someone a bit older and wiser can help me out. I've got a Klipsch RW-12D sub and am using the correct fuse but it blows everytime I turn it on. Now, this is in my apartment in Lafayette and I bounce back and forth between here and Indy every other semester. I just moved back to find it this way and I always turn the sub off when I leave. The rest of my system is working just fine and I use a good grounded sub cable. I'm planning on calling Klipsch support tomorrow but figured someone may know a thing or two about it. Any ideas of something I could try?

If it pops a fuse just turning it on, I'd suspect something in the amp or amp's power supply has fried. That's typically the only time they pop fuses like that.

I assume it is a powered Sub? Need more info!

If it is a power sub this seems likely. Is this with the RCA(s) unplugged that it keeps popping? Probably unlikely but I would check to see if it is under warranty.

It's a powered sub and the Clown was right. Something is wrong with my amp so I'm going to replace it. I'm thinking it got hit during a lightning storm or something (even though I've got it on a good surge suppressor). I'm just out of the factory warranty by three months, but it's only $120 to swap the amp and when the sub cost $750, that's not too awful.

Worth every penny to fix it for that. That's a good sub.

Not all surge protectors are equal. Some have metal oxide resistors(dont quote me) which can take only so much surges before failing. Some use a gas tube to take the surge.

Just a tidbit to let you know, the surge protector could be fried, without you knowing it. It may be time to change it.

I myself us UPS system, a bit pricey and may be overkill. I can set my limits on voltage upper and lower limits, see electrical noise, and best of all. If I working on something on my computer I dont loose anything when the power goes out.

I've picked up a few things from Parts Express. I built my own HT sub using Image Dynamics Dual Voice Coil 12s in a seriously overbuilt MDF box (Sealed two chamber). I have crossovers from Parts Express and the sub runs off of its own Adcom GFA 545II amp. It'll rumble the walls. Great for movies. My Denon preamp controls it well when using it as a 2.1 setup playing music as well.

For power I use an Adcom line conditioner. Awesome unit that delays the on and off of the amps when switching too.

I've looked around at buying one aftermarket but to get a 350 watt amp, it'd be the same cost if not more than what Klipsch is willing to fix/replace mine for. In addition, my sub has digital controls that no aftermarket amp will work with and only the Klipsch "exclusive" BASH amp that is OE will do that. For the same money, I may as well not lose functionality.

I've got a UPS for my computer but not for the sub. After I replace the amp, I'm planning on getting a better surge protector exclusively for it. My apartment complex cut about every corner they could so it wouldn't surprise me if something like this could happen again(beyond the random luck of another storm hitting again). I figure $30-40 bucks now will save me $125 down the road.

I have an APC 1000 Ups on my computer and an APC 1500 UPS for my tv and stereo stuff along with good surge protectors for the fridge, freezer and microwave.

Probably overkill...but what the heck...better safe than sorry.
