Gmt900 Fualty Parts Rant

So this weekend had been a bad weekend for my truck.

First, on Friday while installing my bike rack i noticed that my 3rd brake light was cracked around the screw holes... Ok musta been a bad mold or it was torqued too much from the factory. I call up the dealership and they say to bring it right in. Then they proceed to tell me its not covered under warranty :D . The truck was purchased 6 months ago and has less than 7,000 miles on it.... They said that 'damage' is not covered. I proceeded to tell them its not "damage", its "defective". Long story short, after a little back and forth they decided to replace it under warranty and luckily i was able to keep my cool for the most part, but im sure they could tell i was agitated.

So the parts not in stock, they're going to call me when it comes in stock so i can bring the truck back in.

NOW today, im doing some yard work (pulling another stump) and when i go to get out of my truck i was locked in. All of the doors unlocked except for my drivers door. I hit unlock and noticed that it 'tried' to unlock but the actuator just couldn't get it to unlock. :P

The dealerships closed today but i called them up and left them a detailed message on whats happening. Basically said to make sure they have a lock actuator in stock for my truck so they can fix both at the same time...

BUT now im curious how this conversation is going to go.... Hell they were adamant that a "rock" could have cracked my third brake light (seriously). I wonder if this time the argument is going to be about the body lift :P Don't get me wrong, i know trucks inside and out and my career is basically root cause analysis for Navy aircraft carrier arresting engines... so they WILL replace my actuator since i can prove that my body lift is not the cause of its failure, i just don't like arguing. I'm not an argumentative person and never try to pull a quick one, if i was at fault id replace this stuff myself since its really not that hard. But i bought a $45k truck, i expect this stuff to be fixed.

OK rant off. Thanks for listening

Edit: please disregard the spelling errors (note title)... im beat, long day outside.

Yeah i hope so. I just couldn't believe how much of a hard time they gave me about the stupid brake light on Friday. Now it has me getting pre ramped up for a 'conversation' about the lock actuator

I hear ya Matt. It can be quite frustrating when these little things go wrong and then the dealer starts yanking your chain. I'd be a little frustrated myself.

I've had a rattle in my truck since new that's been driving me crazy! I can hear it over the HVAC system and radio whenever I go over the slightest bump. Sounded like it was coming from the passenger side, behind the dash, near the floor. I got under the truck an hour ago with a handful of wrenches and started checking for loose nuts/bolts on that side. Found that the coolant reservoir tank is loose as heck from the factory and was banging against the passenger side engine bay wall. It looks like there's a bracket built into the tank that's supposed to fasten to the wall but its not. Just stuffed some foam between the tank and wall. Little things like that can drive a guy nuts!

Hopefully they fix everything up for you. If not, I'd look to another dealer.

I wonder if the FMEA for gm trucks only has operator error as the cause :P

They tried to tell you a rock broke the 3rd brake light? Wow, that's pretty good, I guess if you drive the truck in reverse a lot at 85 mph that could happen. I would be pissed too, but that is pretty funny. Wonder how many times they get away with that kind of crap. They must be part time science fiction writers to come up with that.

:P The best was when the service manager said "well i couldn't tell you if a rock did or didnt break it" and i said " well i can tell you for sure that a rock DIDNT break it" :P

... and then they followed with "well we inspect every vehicle 100% before each delivery so it couldnt have been there when we sold it to you", of which i replied "yeah, because its proposterous that there wasn't a small crack there in the beginning that could have been easily overlooked and then propagated over time. A rock hitting it and making cracks centered around one of the mounting screws sounds much more likely"

The sad part is, people must fall for this type of crap everyday and pay $150 for a defective brake light..

Ryan, im sure that the FMEA for all of GM issues can be easily linked to their cost reduction efforts

Yep, I noticed that on my truck the third break light is cracked in three different places. Around both screw hole and one starting in the center. I have started to notice a nice rattle in my headliner that has just started a few weeks ago. Im not going to take it into the stealership tho, cuz i will just get the "well we couldn't reproduce the sound you informed us about" BS. And don't get me started about my AFM vibration. :P

You know that the 3rd brake light is a $70 part right? If it was like $20 i wouldn't bother with the trouble of bringing it there for the warranty... but $70, that's a bit much.. they can take care of that one :P

The door im actually inbetween about. Im not sure how much the part is... but i have this thing about people taking apart my truck.. i dont like it! Those actuators aren't really that hard to replace, and i know i wont break any of the plastic clips taking my door apart, can't speak for their mechanics though... my luck my doors going to rattle like crazy after they "fix it".

These are the reasons i dont like warranties, it'd be much easier to justify doing this stuff myself if it wasn't covered

    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
