1990 Electronic Radio Queston

My radio shorts off, always loses presets, sometimes loses EQ settings. Playing radio, hit scan, display goes blank, radio & EQ goes off, then clock comes back on in a min, eq. loses settings.

Is this a common problem and what is the fix? It isn't a standard din size so it won't be replaceable.

This is the 4 speaker with cassette/EQ setup.

Thanks

It's an old radio, so the electronics are going bad. Most factory radios don't last that long. Perhaps you can pick up another radio from a newer model that will fit right into the stock location.

I've found custom sub boxes to fit under the back seat of older extended cab chevy pickups, so someone's gotta make an adapter to house an aftermarket stereo head unit in the factory location.

You can't put an aftermarket headunit where the factory radio is, but you can put one where the cassette/EQ/pocket is.

There is a wire chase that runs under the tape EQ portion which was notorious for chaffing on a metal support and shorting out, you may want to pull your glovebox and see whats back in there. Back a few years, the Crutchfield gang carried a replacement which actually went in where the factory head unit is, but I do not know if they do anymore. As mentioned, the way to go new is put it where the EQ/Tape unit is. Nowadays you can practically get a bigscreen TV and DVD for that spot. :D
