92 K1500 Help

Recommended Posts

I have a 92 GMC K1500 with about 150k on the odometer. I am looking to move from Omaha, Ne to Anchorage, Ak. I will be towing a trailer with about 10k on it and a full 8' bed.

I am looking to rebuild the engine, but I know that the computers can be a real pain if you go much over stock. I will generally use the truck as a tow/haul rig. Does anyone have any suggestions/options?

Before I leave the truck will have a 3/4 - 1 ton running gear (solid front axle!).

Plus my brake light stays on all the time. It gets brighter if you hit the E-brake.

can't help with the power question but on my 89 K1500 the brake light ( in the dash i am assuming) was due to the anti-lock module being bad but never bothered to replace it as i really didn't see the need hope that helps

First off, don't get caught towing that kind of weight. You will be well over the GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) and the GCVW (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight). The fines for this are rather steep, at least in Pennsylvania they are.

If you are planning to rebuild the engine and add all of the additional equipment equal to a 3/4 or 1 ton, you would be better served to buy a newer 3/4 or 1 ton capable of hauling and towing to your requirements.

Remember even if you do add all of the equipment needed to make it a 3/4 ton your title still shows 1/2 ton and any law enforcement officer is obligated to enforce the laws based on the stated GVW and GCVW.

Mike raises some good points above. Also, a stronger rebuilt engine would not be the end of that story. In my honest opinion, the transmission, brakes, and suspension would really suffer under that kind of loading if not upgraded as well. This would cost a lot of $$$.

If I'm reading it right, this is just a one-time move correct? If purchasing a newer 3/4 ton is not an option, have you considered renting one for the haul? That would really save your own rig.
