Just Changed My Oil And

I'm wondering why the dipstick is spiraled?

My truck is a 2009 Chevy Silverado with a 6.0L engine.

I look at the dipstick like a drill bit with a fluted shaft which is used to move the wood up the shaft and out of the way. Is this why Chevy designed the dipstick this way because that would be a design flaw in my opinion.

Anyway I am having a hard time deciphering what the oil level is due to the dipsticks design.

Any help or opinions will be appreciated.

You gotta be kidding me!!! Is this the best thing you could think of to bitch about?

And people wonder why this site is slowing down.

That's a good thing! The truck is so great that the only he can find to bitch about is a strange looking dipstick...

I really don't know why you replied, it was a wast of my time reading through them.

Is their anyone else that has an actual response that would answer my question.

I would have to say if your bitchin about the site slowing down, maybe it's from your great replies.

And what was your question again?

I do have a legitimate suggestion for you though. If you are having trouble reading your "spiraled" dipstick, I seriously think you should let someone else do any and all maintenance on your truck.

Wow this has started to become a bitch session and an attack on my integrity of working on my own vehicle, thanks for that.

I don't think I need to repeat the question since it will now fall on deaf ears because of the replies I have already received.

after the spiral ends, theres a flat section. That flat section has 2 lines in it. The oil should be between those two lines.

You should check the oil level when the engine is off and with your truck on a flat surface.

Step 1: take out dipstick

Step 2: wipe oil off of dipstick

Step 3: reinsert dipstick

Step 4: take out dipstick

Step 5: make sure oil level is between the two lines in the flat section

It is... that easy

The spiral is not a design flaw, it keeps the flat section of the dipstick centered in the tube. Without the spiral the flat section would contact the edges of the tube and scrape off/deposit oil possibly giving an incorrect reading.

But won't the spiral auger the oil out like wood chips and screw up the reading?

I had no problem reading the stick last week on the 6.0L I was driving. Maybe if your oil was freshly changed it might be difficult to read. I've heard no one else complain. Maybe after you've done it a few times it'll be easier to recogniz.

Very true daniellson... however if you refer back to steps 2 and 3, this will minimize the fluting effect

Aw to hell with it, I am just going to keep using my super teeny funnel and filling the dipstick tube until oil runs out. That way I KNOW it's full.

This thread reminds me of an old poem....

Here lies the bones of Screwy Dick,

He spent his whole life with a corkscrew pr*ck,

He searched and he searched in the feudal hunt,

To find the woman with the corkscrew c**t.

He finally found her and then dropped dead,

The son-of-a-bitch had a left hand thread.
