Hd 2500 Heating Up Isssues

Ok so I live in the desert(palm springs) and I was going to take a trip to vegas friday and in the process of leaving town the temp gauge was trying to rise when I was stopped or in town. On the freeway it was fine due to the mass of air flow. I limped to vegas and changed the fan clutch, it seemed to fix it. But sunday on the way home I went through a drive through and had to wait, idled for about 10 min and it started climbing again, not as fast or as high. The tranny would also heat up with the engine, this is what made me think it was the clutch(not enough air through at idle).

So how about some ideas? 58xxx miles tow pakage,6.0 gas, 4l80e, 9200 gvw, this truck with the tow package should be able to idle in the middle of the sahara for 8 hours strait and not heat up.IMHO

Thermastat?

Old coolant?

SInce you changed the fan clutch and it made a noticeable difference, I'd swap out the thermostat. When they fail, they typically fail reducing coolant flow (unless you get a Motorad safe thermostat or something similar).

That's gonna be today after I get off.

Should I get a 160* or just tear the guts out of mine and keep the body of it?

A 160* t-stat won't help keep it cool, if there is another problem. It opens sooner, but that will only delay the inevitable. Removing the "guts" is bad, IMO. Your truck won't warm up properly, and in cooler weather it will actually modulate to keep the engine at operating temp. Just get a new thermostat and try it.

Have you cleaned & flushed the radiator lately? Any debris blocking the radiator? I doubt old coolant, but internal crud in the radiator could do it.

Stay with the stock thermostat

How? There is no cap. Should I Flush the coolant out the plug in the rad. and the hose in the res?

Its 6 years old, with 58,000 miles. Could be a whole slew of things.

  • Plugged radiator (internal)
  • Plugged radiator (external)
  • Thermostat
  • Fan
  • Water pump
  • Internal engine plugging

I would:

  1. Visually inspect entire cooling system for issues, changes, revisions from totally stock. Fan shrouds, proper belts & pulleys, etc. Any deviations from stock need careful consideration.
  2. Confirm engine is operating correctly.
  3. Make sure outside of radiator is not damaged or plugged
  4. Change fan clutch (you have done this)
  5. Flush coolant & inspect radiator internal - use mirrors, whatever, look up hose connections to determine it is not blocked internally.
  6. Check hoses aren't collapsing (an oldie but goody)
  7. Check water pump
  8. Punt.

So what was the temp. on the guage reading at???????

Mine runs 210 all the time.

It got to 235 once (3/4 of the way) mine also runs right there (about 205) until friday. It seemed like the air was cycling also when I was idling.

The tranny was heating with the motor, it got to about 205.

I will also note that in the winter when snowplowing the

temp runs 230 or better.

Heck......The e-fans on my old Z-28 don't turn on till 225!

I noticed my truck doing this as well. My trans temp was up a little thursday and my engine temp was up today. I drove it agin after being parked for about 2 hours and it never got above normal. I changed my water pump and thermostat in March.

Update!

I took the thermostat cover off and it's all one piece. That was fine because it looked fine, I replaced all the coolant I could with the premix stuff. Either I had something blocking it or the coolant was just no god anymore. The truck runs one peg cooler and when I'm coasting down hill it drops two more, this truck NEVER used to get below 205. The tranny also is running cooler, it has not seen 200 since, and this week we have seen 117* temps. So needless to say I'm happy, just would like to know wtf was the prob.

If you are going by the needle on the gauge, most are locked just below 210 which is anything between 190-215-ish. The gauge will rise once the coolant rises above that. When I go down hill the radiator cools faster than the stat can close so when it drops to 180 on the scanner the needle reads around 160-180. The gauge is good for telling you if you engine is about to ice over or of impending doom but you can't tell specific temps from it.

Glad someone pointed out that thermostat sets the minimum temperature and not the max.
