Rear Diff Oil Change

Hey guys...ive got a 1997 Chevy Z71 and i want to change the gear oil. But i dont know where to fill it to. Do i fill it until it starts coming out of the fill hole? Or does it have to be .5-1.5 inches BELOW the fill hole? Thanks for reading and your input...

fill it to where you can stick ur small finger in there and just touch it. thats what i do.

ok. so i stupidly took the cover off and drained all the fluid before i took out the fill plug. Now i cant get the fill plug out to fill it back up.

AAHHH, the things we learn through life.... Clean up around that fill plug with a wire brush and some brake cleaner, then spray on a little Blaster to soak into the threads.

Always will to the upper range of the spec, i.e. 0.5 inches from the bottom of the fill plug threads.

 

On every other vehicle I ever owned (and I owned quite a few) you always fill through the fill plug opening until oil starts running out. Why does GM have to be so special?

Did you get the plug out? I think I have read at least three threads in the past week about stuck fill plugs.
