panic button

Just irritates me when I accidently press the panic button on the key fob and the horn starts blasting. It has evenb happened when i was in the house with the keys were in my pocket.

Any way to disable the panic button without disconnecting the horn?

Yep, take the key fob apart and put a small piece of electrical tape on the curuit board, between where the button contacts the board.  I havn't actually done this, just heard about it.  Hope it works for you.

Why is it called a key "fob" anyway?  What does "fob" mean?  ???

why disable it?  Its fun to scare people when they get close to your truck

Probably the best time was I was out to eat.  We got a good seat and i could see out the window where my truck was parked.  These 2 guys were really checking it out (tires mostly not so much to steal it).  So i tell my gf to watch.  I have never seen someone jump so high.  I had a good laugh

I thought FOB was a made up word, but it says in the dictionary it is a short chain a man hangs is watch on to carry in the vest pocket. I guess like in the old movies or that guy on the Monopoly game (the banker?) Ya learn something new every day! Maybe everyone has to wear a vest all the time and put the FOB in the pocket. Never mind!

LOL.

We have some kids that run around all over the neighborhood playing in everyone elses yards.  A couple times, I've had the 4 wheelers loaded on the trailer and hooked up to the truck, and the kids were messing around looking at the 4 wheelers.  A couple started to climb up on the trailer when my son went and got my keys and hit the panic button.  Those kids almost ruined their underwear.  It was funny whatching them all scatter in different dirrections.      :(

I don't want to disable mine but would love to figure a way to make the silly thing less sensitive, or maybe even delayed.

I use mine for finding the truck in crowded parking lots.  And the range of this thing is absolutely unreal when compared against older ones that I have used.

I, too, have had it go off when coins or whatnot jam against it in my pants pocket, or if I pick up the FOB incorrectly.

One day I saw this crusty ol' guy that works with me taking a smoke break in front of my truck so I decided to have some fun with him.  He had his back to my truck, so I hit the 'Lock' button which made the 'thunking' sound as the locks engage.  Ray turns to look at the truck, then looks around him...see's nobody so he goes back to smoking.  I press 'Unlock', Ray hears the thunk, turns around...still see's nobody.  One more time and Ray bends over, looking into the grill area of my truck and I hit the panic button.  It was a riot!

I should be ashamed!

LOL!!  That's great!  :(  :P

I got lots of stories about setting mine off by mistake, at about the worst possible times and places.

I'd like to see it be a double pusher, both presses having to happen in, say, less than 5 secs.  That would usually, I think, stop most of the accidental ones.   :flag:

I have always liked to just use the remote starter to make them jump.

They won't be quite as mad as they are when you honk the horn either.

I noticed this problem with the FOB within a month of getting my 2001 Silverado.  I never use PANIC, so I took the fob apart and removed the panic button (cut it out).  It's not a problem any more, and if I really wanted to use it, I could stick something in the hole to make the connection.

For those that lose their truck in a parking lot, just keep pressing LOCK, and follow the beeps..

Thanks for the help guys I'm going to disable it tomorrow.

I had no idea you guys were so bad. Really scaring a crusty ol man.

Great to have a good laugh once in a while is'nt it.

If you want to keep the cosmetics of the FOB so that there is no cut-out button, just take the FOB apart, pull the rubber button switch plate out.  Look under the panic dome thingeeee.  You'll see a black conductor.  Either scrape the conductor away or cut a very tiny piece of plastic or paper and put in there, blocking the conductor.

No more horn, and the FOB looks good.

Don't know why I didn't think of any of this before, until I read all these messages.

And, great idea about repeatedly pressing the LOCK button to find the truck in the parking lot.  I knew THAT!  But, it just never entered my pea-brain.    :(

Ah, the mystery of the "Fob" has been solved.  Life is all really based on Monopoly anyway isn't it?  Anyway, I had panic problems with it in my pocket, getting out of the truck, etc, so I put a piece of Scotch tape under the button on the inside and no more panic problems.

    • I am having similar issues.. 08, 4.8L granted I did had a fender bender and minor damage up front passenger side but I don’t think it had anything to do with it.. I had the high and low pressure checked and my fan for my radiator keeps coming on.. replaced the pressure switch and don’t want to keep throwing parts at it. I did have some minor problems here and there like on long road trips sometimes the ac would get a little warm and then on the highway as soon as I give it a little gas or get a little heavier on the petal it started running cooler. Never had an issue with the ac besides the here and there.. but I also started having issues when I fuel up now it takes a bit to start ( super embarrassing) it runs fine and once started ( only happens after fueling up) starts fine any other time. Could they be related?
    • Spent a small fortune on fuel this weekend.   $6.69 diesel, 18 gallons of that. $6.99 92-octane ethanol free, 10 gallons of that for yard machines $5.59 87-octane for one of the cars, 11 gallons.   $250+ and I didn't even get a tug.   Hormuz ain't Hormuzin again, did not see that coming...LOL
    • Appreciate the advice. I've watched multiple videos. Most showing the most complex for those that have a center console, to one that showed maybe 2 pieces of trim being removed, like 6 screws, pulling back the screen and switch assembly, and installing the inline module. And this was a new/newer Silverado. That didn't look too bad. All the others show alot of trim pieces that need to be removed. I've broken those kind of tabs/clips on my C8 Corvette trying to get to the battery, and that was a lot less clips than what I think is involved here after watching multiple videos and looking at my dash today. I have one on the way. Called a reputable stereo place about installing it and got a "minimum" price of $175. Ouch! Looking forward to seeing what the instructions have to say.
    • Hard to say what the issue might be. Anything from the ability to cool the AC condenser up front, to blend door issues in the HVAC unit, to refrigerant charge, to compressor issues or issues in the lines.   Report back what the techs find on the 29th.   GM has service publications which list acceptable vent temperatures and AC pressures at given ambient temps and humidity. They probably won't touch the system if it's operating within those ranges.   I'm also surprised to hear your 2024 with the L8T is still using R134a? I was pretty sure the HD's had switched to the new refrigerant around 2020.
