im selling the spare 8.1 i have, the guy only wants the rotating assembly. so im thinking of having something done withthe heads and intake and get a mild comp cam for this yukon..

love the idea of a 450-500 hp groceries getting, camper towing, stump pulling machine..

There isn't much aftermarket support for the 8.1L. A camshaft for it will be VERY PRICEY. I don't think a tradiitional big block cam will work. Porting and polishing heads will yield a gain but might need to have your blackbear tune tweaked to take advantage of it.

hey mike,

comp makes 3 or 4 cams for 01-06 8.1..the heads i just thought to play with because of the spare set..so really i would gasket match..just clean things up a little, and then let justin adjust accordinly

They did the 4,7 cylinder swap in the firing order so the lobes on the cam are in different postions. I am surprised comp cams has the cams for the 8.1L. At any rate a camshaft will wake it up for sure. I would check and make sure the stock springs will handle it.

port and polish heads, deck it too. try to raise the compression. and stuff a new bumpstick in it. if you do heads and cam, do long tube headers too. that will complete the package, the long tubes will do more for you than the port and polish will. IF you wanna deal with LT's....

yea i cant imagine the pwr after those changes, right now it will snap your neck launching or dropping from third to 1st..

i love the cam and header idea,,but for the heads i think money wise i be better just poslishing up the openings of everything.

If you do this, make sure you pull the crank sensor, if it's not the updated one replace it, if it is the updated one, take it out and clean it -and the hole.

you wont notice much difference with just port and polished heads, ive done it and beleive me. its ALOT of time and effort. you feel anything really until you do long tubes and cam. long tubes will give the cam and heads full breathing potential. my old man always told me its pretty much pointless to do a cam without long tubes....

makes alot of sense..maybe ill just stay concerened with the cam and long tubes

these stock vortec heads are supposed to flow pretty good anyway

i dont know much about the big blocks but i do know a fair share (i think anyways lol) on the 6 litre. if i was you lookin for a little more balls without FI or on the bottle. i would go with Long tubes, port and polish the heads(cuz you got a set anyways), good cam...along with a good valve train. even just heavier springs. i would go with a whole valve train tho, to accomodate some higher lift, dont know what max lift is on the big blocks. if you phone thunder racing OR comp cams and told them what you are using for valvetrain, they would spec a cam for you. that and a GOOD tune, i bet that truck would break some necks. but you think you got bad fuel mileage now? hehehe i once had a 4 wheel drive 2002 RCSB that i swapped out a 4.8 for a 6 litre mated with a 5 speed stick. port and polish heads, comp cam valve train, TR cam, JBA LT's and a good tune on an LQ4 6 litre. other things done too, electric exhaust cut-outs, detroit locker with 4:10's and a Sachs clutch. anyways the truck moved pretty good with just that done and it didnt cost me very much considering. its long since been sold...i grew up and had a kid needed more room!! i miss that truck tho. was fast!

i have 2 videos of this truck goin thru mud but not on this computer, they are on facebook. it sounded pretty badass. PM me you can add me if you wanna hear it.
