Transfer case fluid question

Hi everyone, just signed up so heres the first question...

I'm finally getting around to changing the differential and transfer case fluids on my 01 ZR2 Blazer. The differentials are not a problem although I do find it strange that I don't need limited slip additive in the rear.

I've gotten conflicting information on the transfer case. I have AutoTrac on my truck and have been told that there is a special fluid that I need to use. I've also been told that I can just use ATF fluid or gear oil depending on what's in the thing right now. The final option I was told is to use gear oil with GM limited slip additive would work fine. Does anyone know what I need?

Definitely autotrac II from the dealer. A transfer case is not cheap, so why risk it on a different fluid. As for the limited slip additive, remember, the G80 is a mechanical locker not a limited slip, therefore, no need for additive.

Umm…I disagree, as I do not remember any ZR2 trucks or Blazer’s running the Autocrap tranfercase’s from my days on the hotline but rather the standard push button junk. Post your VIN and one of us with the magic wand powers will confirm if it is actually Autocrap equipped or not. Better safe than sorry on getting the wrong juice.

…..Many dealer parts counter folks get confused on the regular S-series trucks and Blazers vs ZR2 models. The ZR2 models were quite different from the regular S-series. You could easily put in the $5 buck a quart smurf juice and wind up with the wrong lubricity when you should have only used the $3 a quart Dextron III to get the right stuff. Post the VIN and we’ll confirm Autocrap or not.

A lot of the ZR2 Blazer's have the "AutoTrac" transfer case,However it wasn't available in the pickups.

Like Larry said,Post your VIN and I can run it and tell you for sure.

I'm going to replace the Auto-Trak II fluid in my xfer case. It's a 2002 Z71 1500 automatic. Anyone know how much fluid it takes for refill?

Thanks

A 1500 series Auto Trac transfer case takes 1.8 quarts. My 2001 1500 used the blue Auto Trak II fluid but my new body style 2007 1500 says to use Dexron VI. I believe the GMT 800 style trucks had the Auto Trac transfer case built by New Venture Gear. I was told that the GMT 900 trucks have the Auto Trac built by Magna Powertrain. I guess that must account for the difference.?
