  1. lol well the Ecodiesel had fairly lax oil requirements originally. I beleive the first oil spec was a standard 5w30. But after the massive outbreak of engine failures I believe they're calling for Rotella Synthetic 5w40. Some negligent dealers are still putting standard 5w30 in though... http://www.torquenews.com/3768/ram-ecodiesel-owners-need-be-aware-change-recommended-oil
  2. My truck has made this noise since day 1. It has not worsened or caused any issue in the 3 years I have owned the truck. The noise has been brought up before and is very very common. I don't remember if anyone has ever 100% confirmed what makes the noise. I assumed it's either the oil pump or the vacuum asist pump for the brakes.
  3. The results gonefishn has posted here and on bobistheoilguy seems to show that 0w20 protects fine. He also recently used a 0w30 which also does well. Based on all the evidence, the only reason GM went with 0w20 is to get a better EPA fuel economy score. The only reason they say the trucks MUST use 0w20 is because that's what was used when the truck was certified by the EPA for emissions and fuel economy.
  4. Soundds like a good possibility.
  5. Another free way to disable AFM is to shift down into manual and lock out 8th gear aka set it to 'M7' (6th gear on 6-speed transmissions, 'M5').
  6. Sorry if I come off as trying to brag or act as if I have all the answers. I definitely don't. I'm also not trying to start an argument over some4hing as stupid as the throttle bracket. It makes complete sense that the bracket is designed to float away from the firewall to isolate AFM vibration. The idea of filing a lawsuit over it is indeed ridiculous. A lot of guys that don't have a technical background come here to figure out why the first 15-20% of pedal movement produces barely enough engine power to pull out into busy traffic. It's something that bothered me since most of the previous vehicles I owned were cable throttles. The 5.3 make a lot of power but I guess GM thinks you should really have to goose the throttle to make that power.
  7. Oh? Incorrect on which part? The throttle response is pretty terrible with the factory PCM programming. Guys in this thread are naturally trying to find a simple explanation for why a truck with a 5.3 rated at 355HP and 383 lb-ft torque seems so dead from a stop. The flexible pedal bracket is going to be an easy target to blame, correct or incorrect. GM's truck would get better reviews if they would just tune the truck right.
  8. Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0w-20 in the winter. QSUD 5w-30 in the summer. Mobil 1 M1-212 or Fram Ultra oil filter.
  9. If it's less than 7 years old, the charcoal filter should be covered by the government-mandated emissions warranty. I haven't experienced this issue with my truck yet. I had an 08 Malibu that would constantly kick a BP gas pump off no matter how much fuel was in the tank. Worked fine at all the Kwik Trips in the area.
  10. Yeah they're pricey. A buddy of mine replaced his 3.5 Ecoboost HP fuel pump at 80k miles and the total was $850.
  11. My LT285/70R17's (17x9 0-offset 5" backspace wheels) never rubbed until I put a set of Weathertech no-drill mudflaps. Now I rub in reverse at full-lock.
  12. Oh you would prefer German pickups with bad engines? Whole lot of engine problems coming out of BMW and MB these days lol
  13. I wish mine would peel off. I want to coat it in chassis saver. Did you pressure wash the frame after getting it coated by rust check?
  14. The tighter tolerance claim is a word-of-mouth claim. If the L86 and L83 are built to a tighter tolerance, it would be difficult to explain why GM specifically recommended 15W50 in an L86 during track use. http://www.stingrayforums.com/forum/stingray-corvette-performance/16925-tadge-s-answer-why-15w50-oil-track-use.html#/topics/16925?page=1&_k=dsq5l5 The reality is that GM balanced engine protection vs meeting EPA fuel economy goals when selecting 0w20 for the pickups vs 5w30 for the Corevette/Camaro SS. 0w20 is nice in the winter, but if you drive your truck aggressively in the summer, your engine would be much better off running a 5w30 oil like the C7 Corvettes.
  15. Even today the Japanese vehicles are rust buckets. Toyota just lost a lawsuit and is being forced to recall the Tacoma and Tundra due to severe rust rot. And their frames were painted. I agree with you on strategies for dealing with rust. Oil/fluid film-like materials are the most effective way of preventing rust issues. I spray mine twice each year, both inside and out and it's worked well so far. Until more manufacturers are sued for rust issues, I dont see anything changing. Personally I want to see wax and e-coating go away in favor of an epoxy-based paint or coating.
  16. Got any blueprints or technical data to back that claim up? Why is GM building Corvette LT1's to a looser spec than the LT1's in their pickup trucks? GM recommended 5w30 in their C7 Corvettes and 6th Gen Camaro SS. Plus 15w50 for C7 Corvettes in track day events.
  17. Yep it's pretty obvious GM is pushing 0w20 for the trucks simply for EPA fuel economy. I'm running 5w30 in the summer.
  18. http://www.magnetpaints.com/underbody.asp You could try this stuff instead of painting the spots. Just don't get it on your skin.
  19. Been spraying the same 1 gallon can of FF for the 3rd year in a row now. My frame looks no different than the pic you posted of yours. Like I said, similar outcomes because they operate on the same outcome. It's not as though FF will make the shitty factory wax peel and the petroleum oil won't. The factory wax shrivels and peels because the factory wax is crap, not because you sprayed it with some sheep wax. Keep the peeling spots treated with old oil or FF and your're protected for a winter season. BTW I haven't washed my truck once during the salty winter season, other than a quick spritz or two with cold water.
  20. Considering every GM truck with the factory wax left untouched has peeled off, it's a safe bet that your dad's truck was going to peel off anyways. Mine was peeling a coupled months after after I bought it, well before I started spraying it with FF. I thinks it's all in your head. Toyota guys have been using it for years to keep their Tacomas from rust rotting. Same with the county highway departments, they sprayed their plow trucks every year.
  21. Return it to stock and see what happens. Sounds like a fuel pump issue or a fuel pressure regulator issue. It couldn't have been caused by the tune so you should be alright. To claim otherwise is complete BS.
  22. My frame looks nearly identical to yours and I've done nothing but spray Fluid Film on it. No shriveled up factory wax like you describe. Fluid Film and the oil you sprayed on operate on the exact same principal. You're applying an oxygen/water barrier. Not sure how you washed FF off, unless you washed your truck with hot water. The label says not to wash it with water hotter than 140F. But hey, used oil is just as good as FF. Atleast you aren't wasting you time sitting at the dealer getting the factory wax reapplied.
  23. It won't unfortunately. Good luck though.
  24. GM didn't mention 5w30 being approvved for our trucks BUT they did for the C7 Corvettes. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to use 5w30 in the summer or 0w30 year round. FYI, In the vette manual they say in regions where temps fall down to -20F, use 0w30. I wouldn't use anything heavier though. The engine oil pump is a vane style pump designed for specific viscosities. The cam phaser and AFM system are also designed for a specific viscosity and flow rate. There are enough used oil analysis for these engines now and they show that 0w20 performs just fine. I love the 0w's in the wintertime.
  25. Don't you think you think you should change your avatar to an Elite logo at this point? I have a ton of respect for EE, the quality of the product is quite good. BUT at this point you are acting as a paid representative of Elite Engineering. If you are receiving compensation, you are required to disclose that information. Really, it starts to push the boundaries of what is legal according to the FTC.
