Lagging Power

Hey I drive a 2006 sierra 1500 HD it's got the thirsty 6 litre. I put cold air intake, throttle body spacer, magnaflow exhaust and a bully dog triple dog programmer. And it still has a lag in power around 3500 rpm. Than around 4 grand it kicks right in. I thought the stuff I did would fix this issue but it hasn't. Plugs and wires are brand new. Everything is tip top I just can't figure this out. I've noticed some of the 3/4 ton Chevys I drive at work with same power train have this same trait. I'm stumped. The way it's cammed? Or is it a fuel issue? Or maybe tranny? Somebody please let me know thanks

You need a custom tune  <<<See Black Bear to your left<<<

What your feeling is the torque management/delay that GM puts in these trucks.

Get a Black Bear Tune, sell the throttle body spacer and your programmer to get money for your tune.

This black bear tune will be better than the bully dog? Can I stack them??

The black bear tune will be way better than any programmer out there. With EFI Live that Justin from Black Bear uses to tune GM trucks, you have more options on what to change than the programmer. Rev limiter, speed limiter, remove delays in the trucks, removing torque management completely, changing shift points. Programmer tunes are very limited to what they can do to your truck in performance.

If you can find someone that wants to buy the TB spacer otherwise you can use it for a paper weight. Black Bear will net you a lot more than a Bully Dog.

Everything but the removing torque management....what is that exactly? How much abuse is it going too inflict on my tranny? And how much moola? Sounds cool too me!!! Hahah

tranny will be fine. and are u sure it has 4.10s? mine has stock 3.73 (1500 hd) and i know exactly what your talking about with the lag. justins custom tune will blow ur bullypuppy tune away man. sell it. just email justin. it ends up being around 3-400 depending if you want to keep your old core or not.

List of items that Justin changed/modified:

Idle RPMS

Shift Points

Line Pressure on Trans

Dual Tune (87/93)

Thermostat temp

Tire size correction

Throttle sensitivity changed

Transmission shift profile change (Where the truck immediately shifts into the next higher gear under very light acceleration thus reducing the low speed clunk experienced by most truck drivelines; truck immediately shifts to the next lower gear by hitting more than 45% throttle)

and he did it while monitoring the truck for an hour so he made changes on the fly until I found what I liked. I know Bully Dog can do that but my experience was better...I thought most 1500HDs came with 3.73s out back as noted above. Anyway, we had the Live tune session in Dallas back in December 2008 and the truck is still fun to drive...

The bully dog has all that too man. It made a huge difference with the tranny shifting points and firmness but their is no in between it shifts so hard into second it chirps the tire. As for the gears I did it myself. I think I'm gonna take you guys up on this guy. That lag ticks me off. Another note 1st gear makes an odd hum. Only first. Shifts fine doesn't clunk or bang into gear. It's done it for along time doesn't seem to hurt anything just annoying. And too the guy with the hd chevy this is really gonna work? It will put the bully dog too shame or what?

I started out with an Edge Evolution programmer and I now have a BB tune and trust me, there is simply NO comparison.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....

    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
