Sticking Rear Brake Caliper

Recommended Posts

This is a friend of mine's truck, 1999 Silverado Z71. He says's he has gone through 3 sets of brake pads this year because his right rear brake caliper is sticking. He also said he changed the rotors and calipers on the 1st set of pads and it is still sticking.

Could it be that he just got a bad caliper or could there be something else that is causing the caliper to stick?

His ABS light has been on for a couple years, but he hasn't fixed it because it costs alot of $. Some kind of sensor, not sure what though. Could this have anything to do with it?

Make sure he pulls the slides (two posts the caliper rides on) apart and cleans and greases them. The caliper should ride smoothly on the slides.

I had a caliper stick on the rear after I changed the pads. I had to buy a new right rear caliper and it solved the problem

Ok. I'll ask him if he did.

The caliper brake hose could be old and swollen inside. If this happens, it acts as a one way check valve - it lets fluid in but traps it under pressure inside the caliper, thus causing the caliper to stick. I had this happen in an '83 Pontiac Bonneville. The hose was bad, but there was nothing you could see on the outside of it.

I always replace rubber brake hoses when I change/rebuild brake calipers.
