Electric Mirrors Do Not Extend

I just purchased a 2003 GMC Sierra HD2500 with the electric extendable mirrors and they are not working. When I activate the switch on the driver's door, the motors inside the mirror heads appear to be running, but the mirrors do not move at all. Is there a gear driven mechanism inside there that may need to be replaced? Is it possible to obtain parts for the mirrors without ordering the whole thing?

For this (due to the cost of these things), first I would read through the owner's manual to see if it said anything about this. Something I might need to do with the mirrors - something I don't know.

Then I might try gently pulling on them while someone activated the switch.

If that did not work, I would see if there was an easy way to take them apart and see what is going on inside (without causing damage to the mirrors).

If I couldn't figure out how to do that, I would see if I could buy a used one at a wrecking yard, then take that apart (probably wreck it) and see how it comes apart. See how it works inside. Maybe come up with a way to fix it.

I can sometimes "redesign" things so they work better than originally designed.

As to parts for these, I would first try to find out which company manufactured them. Then try contacting that company. Might try google.com and lots of phone calls.

On my 2004, Sometimes I would have to open and close it 3 times with my hand to reset them. The mechanic told me this and it worked they would jump off track somehow. I hope this works for you!

Take care,

I just looked inside the cover and the whole mechanism is corroded and falling apart. Pieces have broken off and there is white powder aluminum residue all over the place. Too much Atlantic Ocean salt air and salt on the winter roads. I guess replacement is the only option. The electric mirror still works and maybe the heaters too, so I guess I will wait until the whole thing fails before I change it.
