1 gallon of gas has 125,000 BTU's

3,400BTU's per KWH

37.6KWH/BTU

37.6KWH x $0.08KWH = $2.94/gal

87 unleaded = $2.64/gal

Volt = FAIL

$40K price tag, why is GM still chasing this white whale?

I hate to tell you, but your math doesnt quite work out..... The volt will be cheaper to operate than a regular car....

However at the 40k price tag it will probably never pay for itself.

Are you assuming gas will always be that price?? $.93/L x 3.76 = $3.4968 per USA gallon/$4.23 CDN gallon.

Sounds like a winner to me, for those who wish to own one.

I would guess it's to sell to all the greenies out there. It doesn't have to make economical sense. Would a cobalt make more sense pricewise? Of course, but then you don't get to show everyone how much you love the planet.

Your assuming all 125,000 BTU's are being converted into usable energy. When like only 20% of the energy makes it into usable power. Rest is heat and friction.

You've hit that nail on the head Mark. Internal combustion engines are terribly inefficient. I'm not sure about the Volt, is has losses too which means that this whole discussion is too simplistic from either point of view.

Based on current average electricity costs, it costs about 80 cents to charge the Volt's battery.

40 miles for 80 cents? Yeah, let's see an IC engine do that.

I would also like to see gas created from wind, hydro, solar sources. Not to mention coal, which is clean, cheap and plentiful...right here in the good ole US of A

OP, you FAIL!

It's too expensive right now, but the technology will become cheaper in the near future. My only hope is that GM stays the course and doesn't make any more f-d up decisions. We need a vehicle that seats a family of six, the volt is too small....... coal is clean!?!?!

No, GM says it takes $.80 to operate for the first 40 miles. What your not factoring in is the cost to charge the batteries and the efficiency of the gas motor after 40 miles.

As much as I hate to say it, Jeff is right. Here is a quote from the article you posted: "Henderson said charging the Volt will cost about 40 cents a day, at about 5 cents per kilowatt hour." So at $0.10kW it will be $0.80 a day. I remember that figure from a CNN report because I thought it was cheap as hell. If you have a short commute to work and depending on your electric rate you can go to and from work for less than $5.00 a week. :nono:

I just hope that GM sells a whole bunch so it can help to rase to overall GM CAFE and thus allow the production of a Camaro Z28 with the supercharged 550hp motor, and other hotrods! Overall if it helps GM green image great, and again it will help to start the ball rolling. Also it will show GM can make a vehicle that will knock all the high horse Prius owners on their butt. Also hopefully it will shut up the uninformed masses that GM does have some of the best cars and trucks on the planet.
