Hey everyone,

I will appolagize in advancd for posting this here but I have searched high and low for a message board to steer me in the right direction with regards a problem im having with my john deere.

Its a 185 hydrostatic. My problem is that when I move the hydro lever in the forward position the tractor goes backwards, and vica versa. I just got the tractor so dont know its history. It runs great but this is weird!!

Only thing I know is that the mower deck was removed when i got it and there were some extra drive belts that came with it.

Could the belt going from the engine pulley to the hydro pully be twisted and spinning in the wrong direction....can hydrostatic transmissions actually operate ass backwards. I looked at the linkage from the lever to the hydro transmission and it can only be mounted one way....so I dont think the issue is there.

Any help is very much appreciated......and once again, sorry for posting this here.......there is just soo much freaking knowledge on this board(its great) I figured someone would have an idea.

Thanks....

The belt is probly routed wrong . it is possible to run it in the wrong direction wich will reverse the controls .

sounds silly, but could it be wired backwards?

+1

This model is currently one of 3 I own. I might be able to post belt info for you

it does sound like a belt is missing a twist or has one too many twists, i have never messed with one but this would make it do that if that is how it works.

It sounding like the belt might be installed wrong......I'll have to take a look and see if I can route it so its spinnig the pulley on the hydrostatic drive in the other direction.

Your hoses could be connected backwards between the hydraulic pump and the hydraulic motors too. If so, they would turn the motors exactly backwards of how you meant for it to happen.

Unless the pump and motor are all one assembly...therefore no hoses. Not sure exactly what the setup looks like. Pictures would be helpful.

The unit is all one assembly....no hoses. Just a pully the belt spins.
