Head Unit Rms

Does anyone know what the RMS wattage of a head unit in a 08 Silverado non-Bose is? I'm wanting to add some speakers and I want to match them to the head unit.

It shouldnt matter what wattage you put in. All it is, is the handling power of the speaker. You cant really go to high. You could always pull the factory speaker out and it should tell you the ohms and wattage on the back of the speaker.

Yes you can go too high....if you spend your money on some bad a$$ speakers and you don't have the power to push them then you're going to be disappointed. Buy cheap speakers if you're not going to add amplification.

+1...Go for something that will run around $75.00 a pair or so, like infinity references. You might get 10-15wrms out of all factory P.O.S. headunits.

I’m looking at component speakers that run between 60 and 90 RMS but I’m trying to figure out if I need an amp to run them. I know for the best possible clarity and the cleanest sound I would want to run an amp, but for the time being I don’t know that I need one.

IMO wait until you are ready and do it all at once. If you are set on changing speakers get the ones you really want now no matter how underpowered they will be. Then when ready add an amp. This will keep you from spending more in the long run trying to find "perfection".

My problem is that the speakers I want are 60 RMS component speakers, and I'm going to be putting a 10" sub under the front seat and I only want a mono amp. It seems a little over kill to buy a $400 dollar amp to push 60 watts if the stock HU will do it. I'm specifically looking at JL C5-650's for the front doors only.

That stock headunit isn't pushing near 60 watts.....

Ok then what does it push? The speakers operate between 15 and 90 RMS but the sweet spot is around 60, so I would want it as close to that without going over, under is fine.

I'd bet that the factory HU would not exceed 50W RMS x 4. I.E. 12W RMS per speaker from the HU max. The reason I say this is that I bought an aftermarket Pioneer HU 50W RMS x 4 and it sounds so much better than factory!

Either buy el cheapo speakers or add an amp to drive the component speakers. Then later add the mono sub and amp. I know it's expensive and more gear but you really will be much happier this way than trying to run the components from the factory HU IMHO!

Also consider your wiring capabilities BEFORE buying anything!! Are you going to need a higher amp alternator based on total audio system voltage?? It would make wiring A LOT easier if you add a power and ground distribution block BEFORE wiring anything!! Use 4 ga wire from the power supply to the distribution blocks to ensure enough current for your components.

The rms on those C5's is 75 Ryan. The "sweet" spot will be at 75wrms trust me. If you go over in power by 15-20wrms you will be fine. We can't give you an exact amount of output power from the stock HU. Read my post above, you are lucky to get 10-15wrms to each side...grossly underpowered. That stock HU does not deserve those components. Also, Why $400 for a front stage amp? If it's a JL amp I understand why the high price but you can get a nice amp on that set for maybe half that. That set will run you in the $250+ range depending on where you get it. So why not show them some love with decent clean power.

Pioneer TS-A1702C they are around $100 on ebay I have them in my truck on stock hu non bose and they are nice and clear I can turn it all the way up on most music with no clipping if your just going to do one sub you can probably keep these on the stock hu with out the problem of your bass drowning them out
