Driving With Rear Liftgate Glass Open?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Does anyone know if there are any issues with driving with the rear liftgate glass open on an SUV? I've done it once or twice coming from the hardware store with some plywood sticking out a couple feet, but the store is only about a mile away and its all side streets so fastest I went was probably 35mph.

I know it has quite a bit of spring pressure holding it up. Would it be safe to drive at highway speeds (55-60mph) with it open or is it best just to tie it down against the cargo sticking out?

exhaust fumes didn't even cross my mind because tailpipe lets out on the side behind rear tire and traveling at speed, but guess it could.

I'd tie it down, myself. One good wind gust or a quick slam of the brakes could make that window come down hard on the cargo you've got sticking out, which would result in broken glass.

I agree with that assessment.
