Hey guys, just curious and I probably already know the answer "it's not worth it" but I thought i'd ask anyway. I have a couple of friends that have the new 6 spd's in their 1500's and have become very jealous. Would it be possible to put one in my 2007?

Of course i would only consider this "iff" i ever ran into some transmission trouble.

I realize that the gears would also have to be changed, also, what kind of cost would a guy be looking at?

I hear ya. The 4 spd sux. What I'm thinking is to have a couple of my junk yard buddies keep their eyes open.

Just what would the salvage value be on one of them there 6 spds? :idiot:

they should bolt right in, there would be no need to change out gears for any reason....the only thing that would be questionable is the electrical connections, and TCM.

I think it would be worth it in fuel savings alone, provided you could get one for a fair price

I have 4:10 gears, I thought that most of the 6 spds were coming with like 3:42 or something? This still wouldn't matter?

i wouldnt spend money on regearing... use that towards a lift and bigger tires. 4.10s with the 6spd are perfect for 35s :idiot:

In stock form yes. But have it tuned and pop in a Vette Servo and it's 1000X better. :idiot:

Oh yes, Justin did a great job on my TCM :idiot: ; the ECM massaging was just a bonus to the tune experience. It's alot more positive and decisive a shifter, but the tranny gaps are still big relative to a 6 spds. Once one drives a six'er you'll have tranny :sigh: forever.

Us 4 spd'ers only other option to get a bit more mechanical advantage pep is to go from 3.42 to 3.73+, but possibly shooting the highway fuel efficiency(more) as I'm already spinning about 2000-2100 rpm @ 80mph(my preferred cruising speed) THUS, my lust for a "wide ratio" tranny.

No matter what you do to it....1000X crap is still crap

Now if you are really in the market for something cool go for a 6L80/90E:

Nothing has gearing like this:

First: 4.03

Second: 2.36

Third: 1.53

Fourth: 1.15

Fifth: 0.85

Sixth: 0.67

and factory rated at 439ft-lbs engine torque

4l60/65E 4l80E

1st-3.059:1 --------- 2.482:1

2nd-1.625:1--------- 1.482:1

3rd-1.000:1 --------- 1.000:1

4th-0.696:1 --------- 0.750:1

A gear Vendor will split all four gears giving you an 8 speed. Don't know much about em but from what i know that's what they do. About $2500 or so I think.

sounds interesting, it wasn't so much the 6 spds that I was interested in, it was having a taller highway gear. with the 4:10's in the back I tend to be running some pretty high RPM's at highway speeds.

Well, if your truck has the auto 4WD function a gear vendor is out. I called them and they said they didn't make one to work with our transfer case

So what is the message here?, I can convert from 4l60 to 6 speed NO problem.

My stock is 5.3L, 4WD, 4l60 (M30) & 4.1.

I don't see what would be so hard with it. PCM would need programmed, and a new TCM to support the 6-speed and your set. Not sure about cross memeber or drive shaft, but IT can't be to bad if you have a donor truck. I'd love to see someone do this.

+1

I don't think it would be that bad at all. I think the 6 speed is longer, so you would need a different drive shaft. The TCM is built in to the tranny, so you are set there.

I wonder if you would have to have the BCM reflashed??? I bet Justin would probably know. But I haven't seen Justin or Jenna around for a while.

I would love to do this mod and I very well may if my 4L70 ever poops out on me. They have to be becoming more prevalent in the junk yard since they have been in the Denali and Escalades since at least 2007.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
