I hope I am even posting this in the right section..... Any who, hello all! I have a 2000 chevy suburban 1500 with a blown motor and I am trying to order a new crate motor myself. I just want to check with SOMEONE....anyone to see if I am about to purchase the right one. I am about to clicks of the mouse away from ordering from jegs the only motor they offer for a 2000 suburban. buuuuut I just feel a little iffy about weather it will fit, blah blah blah. ok yeah thats kinda risky just to get one from jegs, as they dont have alot of newer motors for sale most are for hot rods that sort of thing. the easiest way to deal with this is just by a stock motor that came with your truck to begin with.

 

i work at a GM dealer and the stock motor for that truck (12491853) is about 1 day away from any local dealer. This way you get what had came out of it and everything works....computers,sensors...ect.

 

just a thought, most of those jegs motors are more intendent for people who are doing conversions or want to put newer technology in that 69 camaro.

well that is something that is in the new GM performance parts catalog but i got it right here, so i can help with this.

 

pn 12491857 say's lq4/lq9 up to 325hp without upper intake as well ignition exh...ect but a good buy at $3300. it list out at $3500.0

 

it takes about 3 days to get. However its funny they list for the lq9 as that motor is differnt in horspower ratings, but i guess they were thinking they will fit all the same. Youll loose power though

So I take it she has the 454 in her burb? SHWEET DEAL IF SHE DOES! Do NOT go with JEG's. I'd rather you deal with GM or get some recomendations on who has good rebuilt or crate engines.

Thanks for the info. I am soooo glad I didnt purchase and ship from jegs...... I don't know if I have 454 in my suburban, its all a bunch of metal that has turned into a huge pain in my but lol. I really appreciate any advice you all have for me, thanks!!

The 2000 Chevy suburban 1500 came with the 5.3 liter they didnt put a 454 in a 1500, the 2500 came with the 6.0 liter.

i would go Thur a GM dealer..if any issues come up you can go back to them in person, and not deal with some butt hole over the phone..

I would also recommend considering the cost you're looking at. Total it all up and see if it's really worth it or not to put that kind of money into a used truck compared to what it's value is. Granted it may be a nice truck but, if it still runs and drives, I'd consider whether it would be better to sell it and get different truck for less than a new engine costing over $3,500 plus probably labor putting it over $4,000 to install it.

 

BTW...how many miles are on this truck, what do you mean by the engine being "blown" and has the transmission been rebuilt or is it original? Sorry for the extra questions but, thinking monetarily rather than for the right part might lead in a different direction.

I dont mind the extra questions.... It had about 150000 miles. I say blown because for 4 months prior to it just not working any more, I was going through a jug of coolent and bottle of oil daily. crap was getting into the oil somehow...all white and foamy icky.... I got the truck given to me, fell in love with it and was hoping to fix it. lol. Its really not that great of a truck, but I have grown partial to it....

Well...4 months ago you had a blown head gasket...that would have been a much cheaper fix...but by now you are into a total rebuild. That's about 2000 for me to do...If I were to peg a price on it for a shop to do it I would say around 4000-4500, and maybe if your lucky a 90 day warranty. If you can get a new engine for 3500, even 4500 installed, and it comes with a 3 year 36K warranty...that's a no brainer.

 

When we rebuild engines they come with a tail light warranty.

 

When I see your tail lights pulling away from the shop the warranty is done.

But Like I said...we do it for 2000 bucks and minimal labor cost. Like maybe 100 bucks. But me and my buddy are both military and don't need the money, we repair cars on the side for as cheap as we can to help people out, we only charge cost for parts and usually enough labor to cover a meal or two at Mc D's and some coffees, not make a living.

Yeah, sounds like it was making some bad sounds under the hood if you had water/coolant getting in there. Water in an engine crank case is bad, real bad when it's that much. Anytime the oil looks tan/brown/foamy something is seriously wrong,( unless you're using Penzoil, then that's normal for that junk oil). If it were me, I'd sell the truck and get a different one. Don't take this wrong but, you don't want to get too attached to something that may nickel and dime you broke. The transmission may go out as well, so consider that cost as well. The drive train is suspect in my view if the engine was neglected before you received it. Truck given away...be careful. Those engines do go a long way, like over 200,000 miles if cared for in from beginning and throughout it's life. You're fortunate that the truck was given to you so a new engine would be ok but, the rest of the truck should be looked over before shelling out $2,000 to $3,000 for an engine. There are many other trucks like yours that won't need an engine or transmission that run great and have a good history.

 

I bought my 1999 Silverado last year for $4,500 and haven't had anything major wrong with it that didn't put it over book value to purchase and repair. At the time, I couldn't find anything less than $7,000 or $8,000 for something this nice. I put about $1,600 into getting the front diff rebuilt (because of noisy bearings), transfer case pulled out and re-sealed, rear main engine seal replaced. I'm expecting a transmission rebuild at some point but still won't be more than I would worry about so, in the mean time I'll just just keeping it well serviced and wait for it to fail.
