04 6.0 To A 06 6.6

ok so i picked up an 04 2500hd 6.0 in august for 16k. Its been ok with a few things that needed to be taken care of. As of right now, it needs a bumper, respray on the rear piller, and the truck kinda binds taking off when turning the wheel on a turn. Seems like maybe something with the locker in the rear end. Truck has 80k. It does go good, but sucks on gas, which i already knew. Well this weekend I found a Chevy 2500hd 06 6.6 truck that is MINT. Its in wicked good condition. It was a 48k truck and the place wants 24k for it. It has 102k on it right now and was from Florida so it never saw winter. The dealer I bought my truck from will give me 13500 for mine, which is 1800 less then what I owe. Is it worth switching over to the diesel? Walking out teh door the truck is 28k with everything. The truck is in show quality condition. Should I do it? The brother is a diesel mechanic and loves chevy and sais this would be a kick ass truck to own. Im thinking this will be my last truck for a long time.

Attached is the link to teh truck.

Also, is it better to just let these things run when going to like the stores to shop and eat? I usually end up going to places a lot on teh weekend and was told its better to just let them run to cool down the turbo.

let me know guys, i need more opinions, this is a lot more money for a truck i use on weekends and for snowmobiling.

They put it up to 26k but i was there when it was 24k, so they are going to honor it.

Thanks

If the truck meets your needs and you can afford it buy it.

Try and run the truck vin in the GMVIS at a gm dealer and see what kind of data that spits out about your truck.

You will be very happy with the truck, based on my experience with my truck.

I think it just comes down to... Do you need a diesel and can you afford the price tag? Looks like a great truck

The only time I let mine sit and idle for a cool down is if I have been towing. Even then it's just for a few minutes.

BTW that truck looks extra clean for the miles!

Go for it!

The diesels do cool while idling, but it's not necessary unless you are towing heavy or heavy on the throttle when the EGT's get up there. Usually not a big problem with normal driving or light towing. It's said that short trips aren't good either, but I say drive it however you want. These newer diesels are tough all around.

If you start getting into heavy (real heavy) towing and/or serious mods, then I would worry about it a little more.

For a price difference of $12 700.....Hell No. $28 000 out the door for an 06 with over 100 000 miles is way too much. I sold a 2007 4 door dodge dually 4x4 lariat with sunroof sliding rear window etc. Every option imaginable with 47000 miles for $28500.

You would have to drive a hell of a lot to break even. Your chances of passing on are greater than a break even point if the truck is used on week ends mainly. I have just done the opposite of what you want to do and after all the diesels I've owned I know I made the right choice. If you are going to tow real heavy all the time, I would suggest a dually in any case.

I was gonna say the same thing! My old man picked up an 08 with 19k on the clock for $30,000.....

You'd be crazy to get rid of a 80K pickup for a 100K pickup for almost $13K more. No way. Keep driving the 6.0 and save up for a newer diesel (or lower mileage one). You're 6.0 isn't going to lose much more value anyways until you it starts getting well above 100K. I went thru this same thing about a month ago. Unless you pull heavy alot, puts tons of miles on (like 35,000+/year) or just want a diesel, economically it won't work. I put roughly 15K on a year with occassional heavy towing. Cost per mile with the current fuel prices here with the 6.0 is $.215/mi (12 mpg) would be about $0.155/mi (18 mpg) for the 6.6. So for 15k/year I would be saving $900/year. But that wouldn't take into account "potentially" higher maintainance costs, intrest on borrowed money, or higher insurance/taxes. I don't want to rain on you're parade, just want to make sure you're looking at all the costs before dropping this kind of money. Nice thing about an 06 DMax is that they have about the best combo of power/mileage of all the years and don't have near the emmisions the newer ones have.
